PSU vs. Penn Discussion Thread

JB said Kerk could have gone if needed but he was not 100%, once Dean won he decided to sit Kerk, though Kerk wanted to go.

As long as Edsell and Ball don't get bonused, we should win the dual on bonus points..but holy hell..wasn't expecting to be in a 5-5 split with Penn even with 2 of our best guys out..

The lack of offense is a concern..
Edsell and Ball both won

Edsell and Ball both won
Hindsight 20-20, hoping that a former PIAA runner up who trains with the PSU upper weight crew daily while being coached by Cael "just won't get bonused" might have been underselling him a bit.

And Edsell was a PIAA champ

All you have to do is read posts from earlier in the year to see that expectations were certainly way more than never. Just pointing out the facts…
“the facts” as you call them or more accurately “message board poster expectations” are totally irrelevant as to what you would reasonably expect from an unranked walk on in his third year of the program which is zero. is he good enough to score points at ncaas? no, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been a pleasant surprise.

if you haven’t realized by now, message board posters often have insane unrealistic expectations because they’re homers. see joe lee last year.

sorry no pbp from me tonight I was watching on TV. My wife almost kicked me out of the house during Beau's match because I was screaming about his guy stalling and the ref letting him get away with it! Edsell and Ball looked good! Nick Lee has the flu on is getting over the flu, never seen him gas like that. Miss not seeing RBY, AB and Kerk! Hope we are at full strength Sunday!

Beau Bartlett in his 3 wins over Crooks, Ogunsanya and Artalona has 1 takedown exactly. Still think opening it up is a mental thing for him right now but tbh ... the fact he keeps finding ways to win is ... something else. To be honest for a guy who is a "small 149", the fact he's won twice on the mat gives me a lot of reason for optimism. I'm a lot more confident about his neutral offense coming.

Today, he found a way to win despite GIVING up the takedown.

I just think at this point winning low scoring gives Bartlett the best chance to win. It’s tough for him to finish on longer, stronger guys and there’s a good chance of giving up points in a scramble.

You missed my point…facts that quite a few posters expected way more. Never said or implied their expeditions were facts or that message boards are not full of crazy things.

True Freshman Zain Retherford.

At least in the sense that Zain was undersized and not yet a wrecking ball. He won a lot of matches on sheer willpower that year.
I'd love that but Zain was a clear Top 3 level wrestler that year. Just ran into Port in wrestlebacks and lost in Tiebreakers. He beat Logan for a reason. But you're right, Bartlett is just winning on will power. The kid is very loose, poker face on at all time, always sprinting to center. Kid is a gamer and I think Cael sees it and that's why he made the decision to send him out at 149 so early.

it’s a good example about how bracket composition can lead to misleading final placements. port getting upset put him in zains consi semi. similar to how marinelli had to wrestle marsteller in the consi quarters (following massa in the r12 no less).

Yup ... ironically Zain beating Logan at Rec Hall screwed him over. Put him on that side of the bracket. Not sure if Zain keeps the 3 seed if he doesn't have a win over Logan (Devin Carter was 18-1) but Zain was definitely not 5th best that year.

Hard to imagine Zain would've been the 3 seed with 3 losses even if all were to Stieber. Carter was 14-0 going into nationals. BUT then Stieber would've been the 1 seed ahead of Port.

Marstellar was the 5-seed that year. His seed predicted he would be in the consolation semifinals. I can't agree with the analogy.

Gonna go down with that ship.

I think some of the higher expectations for Barraclough were likely due to his freestyle win over previous AA Kyle Shoop, which one would think could at least translate to “points at NCAA’s.”

But, if he can’t get off the bottom, that’s one area that wouldn’t be evident in freestyle. However, it’s also an area where many guys can improve (except at tOSU).

Two positives from last night:
1. Starocci looks like a man on a mission. His aggressiveness was off the charts against a pretty good wrestler. He seems to be taking the bonus points challenge to heart.
2. For all this talk of Beau being small, he looks really strong and looks like he has a limitless gas tank. Combine that with extreme confidence and Starocci-like ice water in his veins late in close matches, and I still like him to AA at a weak weight class.

WE ARE!!!

I went to the match. Beau sure has a gas tank on him ,even in SV. Penn kid was gassed. Beau looked like he could have gone another couple of minutes with no let up.

and yet the Penn kid was the one with all the offensive attempts late in the 3rd and in OT. It was also the Penn kids first Bout coming back from injury (I was sitting with the father of a penn wrestler who I know). I think Bartlett was lucky to not have been warned

if that is the Bartlett we see all year at 149, it won’t result in many, if any points in March IMO

he finished third and avenged his only loss of the tourny. if marinelli was on the other side of the consi bracket he might have finished 4th instead of 7th. that’s the point.

zain lost to a guy who got beat by the 9 seed. but what actually matters is that he lost to the 1st and 3rd place finishers.

Those weren't offensive attempts they were dive down to get this pressure off of my head attempts. Penn dude backed up constantly and then took a few 1/4 shots to avoid stall calls. It isn't easy shooting at a fleeing foe.

But the poster compared the 3 seed having to wrestle the 1 seed in the consi semis with the 1 seed having to wrestle the 5 seed in the same.

The 5 seed wrestled to chalk. The 1 seed didn’t.

complaining about having to wrestle the 5 seed in the consi semis makes no sense. It’s where they were predicted to be.
