I am interested to see what Rademacher does in college this year. 97kg seems to be his ideal weight so I wonder if 197 is a tough pull

PJ got hosed. His suplex on the edge looked like 4 to me, but all he got was a push out point. But, even worse was Baitukaev being allowed to just lay on the mat & catch his breath. When the ref pressured him to get up, then, all of a sudden, he was injured. Is gasping for air an injury now? Without the lung time outs for Baitukaev, PJ would have probably gotten another score for the win.

It was a risk free challenge, needed 2 to win if they lost the challenge and if they didn’t challenge.
Yeah, thought they should have challenged the white-paddled 2 for Duke in the 1st too, personally. Sure looked like he broke 90. And Duke has undoubtedly learned some good lessons from that bout. Hope we get to see that matchup for years to come.

Japan with finalists at 65 and 70. Neither made Zzs preview! Something special is going on there across the age groups and styles
It’s so hard finding info on them. They send guys to Asians but then someone else to worlds. The Emporers cup and the Meiji (sp) cup are 2 huge tournaments for them and I found some info but I looked all over and couldn’t find shit about those 2 guys. It is amazing how many top level guys they are turning out right now. The kid who beat Luke in the finals last year is still U20 eligible but isn’t on the team. I know he can’t make 57kg and maybe just got beat out for the spot by Ono at 61kg. I really have no idea. Super curious to see Ono tomorrow

I just went and looked at U20 Asians this year and Japan sent Ogino who didn’t place while Karampour won gold. A couple months later Japan sends Yamashita to worlds and he techs Karampour.

Screenshots rarely make good evidence, but still....

The big issue is the whistle blew before he initiated the throw. We commonly see continuation given in that scenario, but it's inconsistent. However, if the whistle blows, you can't give points, which is probably why they didn't challenge. Tough break for sure.

It's also hard to tell if Duke's foot was completely out of bounds from the angle - which would explain the early whistle.

Here's a very similar situation from Gable's Olympic final:

That tracks. I didn't have the sound on, so missed the whistle. I remember hating that call in the Olympics too.

In the finals Lilledahl will have Pavlov. This is the match we all wanted. Luke beat him handily last year but Pavlov has been really really good this year. He won U20 Euros where he beat Luke’s semifinal opponent Gasparyan by the same score Luke did, 4-1. Pavlov also took silver at Russian nationals beating U23 world champ Mongush. I’m super excited for this match.

Luke is just so smart and fundamentally sound. He makes everyone wrestle in positions he’s comfortable in and once he gets a lead it’s game over. He is elite at closing out matches whether he’s up big or just winning on criteria. There are times I think he could continue to score and open up a bigger lead but he never takes chances when he doesn’t need to. Just super high wrestling IQ.

I think Luke wins his 2nd age group level world title in a super tight match. That would give him a U17 silver and gold and a U20 silver and gold with 1 more year of U20 eligibility

I just watched the Ankush match and Ankush looks like a grown man and yet he wrestled U17’s last year. He took silver last year losing 4-3 to Blaze. I know people say Luke won’t make 125 for long but his opponents almost always look bigger than him. Ankush was noticeably bigger and Gasparyan was as well.

It's hard to hear with the crowd noise, but I'm pretty sure it blew as he was coming up to his feet with the body lock. I definitely think the early whistle was the wrong call though. Feel for Duke.

He's so good without really doing anything that makes your jaw drop. All he does is win. So fundamental and smart. Would not be shocked if he wins 125 this year.

I've really only seen him in freestyle. The one folkstyle match I saw was when Knox turned him several times at WNO. Has he shown consistent bottom problems beyond that match? With 3 point takedowns that might not be as big a deal as it used to be though.

Uh oh .... js8793 needs to go back almost 3 years to find a way to pick apart and find flaws in Luke ... he's going to be good /s

Yeah, no wrestling fan on earth could watch that match and feel PJ was outwrestled. It happens, and I expect Duke to learn a lot from the experience. And not to knock Baitukaev--he has incredible balance/feel and an arsenal that is reminiscent of his uncle, for sure.

That’s the only match I’ve ever seen him turned like that. Freestyle is absolutely his better style because he’s so good from neutral and isn’t a dominant top wrestler. Like you said though, the 3 point td will really benefit him. 125 is wide open but I think Luke wins it. I think he would’ve won it last year as well

Bassett and Duke should win bronze. Rademacher probably finishes 5th. He is wrestling well but I can’t see him beating Babaloo. Luke wins gold. In my preview I picked Begenjov to win gold with Ryder bronze but I think I keep selling Ryder short. The kid is ****ing good and just finds ways to win. So I’m changing my pick and going with Ryder to win gold

i think that is mainly due to how much international guys cut. I could see a scenario where Luke stays at 57kg through the next olympic cycle but wrestles at 133 for 2-3 years of NCAA eligibility. Just the grind of the NCAA season makes holding 125 so much harder. (Also there are many rumors about a switch of Olympic/International weight classes that would make 60kg the lightest weight)

Luckily he won’t have to deal with Pavlov’s dog!

And honestly it was a good call. The action stopped, had Duke run down for 2 he would have gotten it. They were both out and then PJ stepped behind, lifted and threw.

Ohio State has a scholarship offer ready for Baitukaev.
