PSU - ASU Dual Thread

I've heard that RBY and Mark Hall are good friends.

They may have quietly conspired before the dual to put an extremely motivated effort into their matches and, in turn, a whoopin' on ASU.

RBY may have been dissed (and subsequently pissed) when Zeke bumped Millhof up to 133.

And Zahid was arguably speaking with calm confidence as if he now owns 174. (See the recent FLO interview where he said he was 10-1 over years against Hall.)

That said, it's all in the spirit of competition and folks find motivation where and when they can get it.

I have already rewatched the match. The benefit of the ffwd button and several bouts ending early you crank right through.

Met Finesilvers’ mom in Clevland in hotel lounge. She is superstitious. Wound not get hotel or tickets before sons qualified. Kudo’s to Westin hotel. Long sold out, made room for family. Four sons at NCAA championships. She was (rightfully) extremely proud.

Well I will be the guy that takes the unpopular view, didn’t like it . Think it is punkish when Gable or anyone from Rutgers does it and think the same when my guy does it
I would agree. I saw it in a bar and was a bit distracted so didn’t notice if in retaliation. If he initiated it, I feel you.

Berge gets the W but I didn't love his offense in that match. Scored off counters nicely but not much else.
Maruca slid backwards all night and shot all of his shots with Brady stepping into the shot. It is difficult to get your offense going when you are always chasing and you know any shot is going to leave you extended. I thought he was great at scoring his takedowns, but I was surprised Brady did not ruthlessly attack Muruca's head to both slow the reverse movement and position himself into offensive attack positions.

It was a good win.

Yeah, I saw it, and RBY was motioning for Millhof to come back to center to get busy with him. Kinda similar to something RBY did in an earlier dual this year (Kent State?) when his opponent was taking too long to restart and RBY gave him a little nudge to take his position on bottom so they could stop wasting time. Love his relentlessness!

It was almost like he forgot what was happening or thought they were in the practice room, or something of the sort. He got the escape, and then was like "now let's go again from neutral".

Easy on the hyperbole that will follow that win. Valencia won’t be that tired in March. Early season big match v that weight cut.

But weight cut or not....the first period was a beauty.
Mark was physical as hell, was out of position once, and that was barely and resulted in Valencia getting to his leg. Not deep though and Mark's hips in that situation were "WOW".
If Mark wrestles like that in March the outcome will be similar.

Agree with all this. And I had the same question -- when (if ever) was the last time you've seen a reigning national champion unable to get out from bottom for an entire period (or more)!?

2013....Steiber. Rode by some guy named either Ruth or Ford, maybe Rutherford. Later known as Zain the Pain Train

Relive it for yourself to decide which is better...tough call for me but I lean towards Zain just because that was his coming out party so to speak as he was a true freshman and that left us with visions of greatness to come. However, Mark’s is up their too as Zahid, who looks like last years Cassar, was flat or nearly turned a couple times.

Just curious to know from you guys who are there. How was the ASU coaching behavior? I've seen Pritts get into the face of an opposing coach, and I have a friend who said Zeke really annoyed him after an ASU wrestler lost in the last second. I don't think that is their usual way of behaving but they do get spooled up sometimes.
Zeke was up and carrying on, but oh well. He and Cael consider each a friend so there wouldn't be any getting in the staff's face. Even if not friends, who in their right mind is going to get in Cael's, Casey's or freaking Jake's face?

285: #4 Anthony Cassar vs. Brady Daniel

Per 1
Cassar in on a blast double for the TD, 2-0. OOB with 2:16 left. Daniel starts to stand but is brought back down. Caesar on the left side is working the right arm. He lets the arm go and after a bit goes left arm to right arm, and tilts him, and gets 4 NF, 7-0. They go OOB with 1:07 left. (Caesar got close to a pin there.) Not much movement from Daniel off the whistle. Finally Daniel is up, ad Cassar cuts him, 6-1. 30 sec left. Daniel shoots, nothing, tries to spin behind, nothing. End.

Per 2
Caesar takes bottom. He's out in a few sec, 7-1. Cassar gets a low ankle to a single, spins and gets the TD, 9-1. Stall warning on Daniel. Caesar cuts him, 9-2. Cassar with a quick TD, 11-2 (snapped the head down and spun behind). End. RT @ 3:11 for Cassar.

Per 3
Daniel takes neutral. Caesar with a blast double for the TD, and gets the fall @ 5:18!!!!!!

Final, 41-3, PSU
Ok, I am still intoxicated over Hall's win. However, Cassar's double leg blast is still playing in my head. It was the most EXPLOSIVE double I have seen in a long time. It was freaking VIOLENT,

So happy for Mark, amazing how ZV had absolutely no answers against Hall.

I openly worried that Zahid had gotten into Mark's head after his 2 losses last year. It appears that it's only my head Zahid had gotten into. Mark's confidence is obviously fine. 2 takeaways: (1) Mark knows he can beat ZV on any given day; and (2) EVERYONE else now knows Mark can beat ZV on any given day.

I'm sure their next rematch will be a great show with either guy capable of winning it. I like the fact that when staring across the mat at Mark, Zahid now sees the guy who put the kibosh on 2 undefeated seasons and pumped the brakes on his premature coronation.

I changed my pick to Hall after hearing his interview on the Coaches show. I felt like he was seriously focused and Zahid would be feeling the travel, so I didn't feel like I was purely going heart over head.
ASU came to town on Tuesday, so travel should not have been a factor.

It also took Zahid officially out of Hodge talk. And possibly put Mark Hall back into it.

I learned something tonight. I readily admit I have been irritated Iowa refused to come to Penn State to wrestle this year, but after watching tonight's beatdown I can't find fault in Coach Tommy's decision. Brands knew what kind of team Penn State was going to have this year, so I am 100% certain he simply decided I am not taking my guys there just to get a embarrassingly, physical beatdown on national television. Big Penn State recruiting tool at Iowa's expense.

Another great who may finish with his only losses being to PSU guy/guys.IMAR- Nolf,Joseph. Valencia-Hall.Close with Dean-Ruth,Nickal, but I think had another loss maybe two.

One big factor that has been mentioned before re: Hall vs ZV at NCAA’s—wrestling in semis vs finals. Mark won in semis when Zahid had to keep his weight down. Tonight with a close weigh-in, Zahid lost again. In finals Zahid can put a lot of weight on, and handled Mark. Zahid looked a lot different in semis close match with Amine. No way it’s going to happen, but would love to see Mark get ZV in semis to increase his chances. No matter when they meet, should be a great re-match!!

I believe Dean lost twice his Jr year at the CKLV, when he was a bit dinged IIRC.

Not many bring it up but the closest Zahid came to losing last year wasn't Hall in the finals but Bo Jordan early in the season (Cliff Keen, I think). Zahid went up but then gassed badly and was forced to hang on. The key might be keeping it close while remaining active, then gassing him out. Hall deserves credit for that ride, but that was also partly Zahid being done.

Not only was Hall able to ride out his takedown in the first period and ride an entire period in the third period, but he escaped very quickly himself in the second period (in about 8 seconds I think) and so both did not lose his riding time and also gained a point that ZV wasn't able to recover himself.

I think Hall was ridden for a while in his loss to ZV at NCAA's, wasn't he?

The point is that Hall showed strengths in all positions: (a) defensively not to give up any points from neutral (b) offensively to re-attack and get the takedown (c) from bottom in order to gain the quick escape and (d) from top to ride out strong the periods.

A well-executed plan that came across as more than a simple 4-0 win.

Gotta love that not once did it strike Jim Gibbons to question how Roman Bravo-Young's name could possibly reduce to the initials RVB.

I'd say it's a coin toss as to whether he corrects himself next broadcast.

I called Wreck Hall victory last week.

Like to rewatch the match but wifey hallmark Xmas shows trumped the meet. Live it looked a lot like Zahid tugged in Hall’s headgear a couple times. May be wrong. RBY actions at the end were not pleasant, thinking Casey will address next week.

What was up with RBY. Right after he escaped early in the third, he went back to the center of the mat and put his foot on the line as if they were restarting in neutral. Anybody else catch that?

I did catch that and hoped that the coaches would let him know that was a potential mistake
