PSU - Iowa 2020 Dual Thread

I'd say this is pretty damn accurate. Their board shows they were worried. They're also calling RBY dirty which is total bs. RBY simply pulled a leg out for a cradle. And they're supposed to be educated in wrestling? As far as Mark goes. I've never seen him look like that. Even when he lost to Zahid, Zahid had to work his ass off to get takedowns. Props to Kem, but that was the strangest match I've seen Mark wrestle. As far as refs, as I stated during the match. They're just awful and goes for both teams. I used to not know what a takedown was. Now, I have no idea what stalling is. The call against Kem was ridiculous as well.

I think Mark was a bit overconfident and it burned him

Kemerer has length which Mark struggles with. I am confident that Mark can figure it out but Kemerer is the guy he’s going to have trouble with because of this. He had issues with Zahid’s length too.

I have full confidence in Marky moving forward and one match does not change my opinion that he is the guy to beat at 174lbs but Kem is going to be a tough out for him.
In a tournament setting Hall will be fine against Kemerer. I think last night Hall got caught up in the emotion of Cenzo's match, went out looking for the big move to put the match away, almost nailed it...when it failed and Kemerer got the 2, I think his emotional gas tank went to E really fast.

In a tournament, Hall will be detached, move of a focus on the individual, he will be the old Mark. Calm and calculating, will be patient for Kemerer to make a mistake and will get the 2 and win low scoring matches.

For any refs out there why didn't RBY get two back points after both times he had the cradle locked up and was turning AD? Below is the language from the rule book.

Art. 7. Injury — Imminent Near Fall. When a pinning combination is executed legally by the offensive wrestler and a near fall is imminent, but the defensive wrestler is injured, indicates an injury or has excessive bleeding before a near-fall criterion is met, action will be stopped and a two-point near fall shall be awarded to the offensive wrestler.
Knowing the rules optional

Agreed. Surprisingly, it looked like Cael was even frustrated with him towards end of first. I think its when he gave up bad reversal at end. MH is a technician who tried to end that match all by himself last night. I'm comfortable with where he sits going into tournaments.

While I agree with some of this, I believe people are underrating Kemerer. He is a hell of a wrestler.

You missed the fine print. It says "except in CHA, against a high ranked opponent, when gable is in attendance".

The near fall was not imminent. Desanto was not going to his back, or on his back when the action was stopped.

You think he willingly gave up 6 points to a rival in the biggest dual of the year?Desanto?!?

DeSanto is and has always has been a XXXXXX XXXXXX. He looked just fine walking on the mat. I think he got caught in the cradle and knew it was over and tried the injury time out to save his ass from the pin.

We really have to think about burning Beard's redshirt at 197. Iowa was exposed as a paper tiger last night! If we could generate some points at 157 with Berge (who would wreck Young) or Beard at 197 who would destroy that slug Warner. Iowa only has one superstar in Lee and an emerging stud at HWT (although I want to see how he does against Gabel before I crown him). With Iowa's normal underachievement at the Tourney, they are ripe for the pickin this year! We just need Berge or Beard and we can take the crown again this year.

That might explain the first stoppage, not the second.
The first stoppage was a takedown, not called, though.

Kemerer is an excellent wrestler. He unfortunately ran into Jason Nolf who is an elite wrestler and got buzzsawed every time he faced him during his career.

Hall has made the finals at 174 for the past three years (winning 2 NCs). Kemerer has made zero NC finals in his career. He knows what it takes to with an NC. Kemerer doesn't.

This is our annus horribilus with all the injuries, and an inability at the moment to fill the healthy squad with top flight talent.
So be it.

I think the two are tied together. If Berge is not able to return Cael may think the mountain is to steep to overcome by just adding Beard in...but if Berge can come back and go the rest of the way..it makes sense then to pull the shirt on Beard because I think that really puts you right in the race.

Was his back exposed? I don't remember seeing that. I will replay the match later.

LOL, when the ref stepped in the first time the cradle was locked and RBY was turning him to his back. You can deny that as long as you want but it won;t change what happened.

Well, there's always next year. Er, wait, I mean 2023.
Goofer motto since 2014.

-3 from desanto win (prior to injury) to +6 for the injury default...9 points
Desanto not used to being manhandled. He was crying both times that rby was going to pin him. He was in shock. I can’t beleive he looked at his coaches crying. Brand stood their with a glazed ( are you kidding me) look on his face.
That second cradle did not move his leg in an awkward movement. Desanto just used it as a crutch to tell himself a story.

Beard will be 2 years out of High School after this season. We are in trouble if he’s not beating Shak in the room right now. Burn the shirt as lots can happen.....
The coaches have had to have discussed this at some point you would think. What we saw last night some points at 97 may be the determining factor in winning it all

Out of the 7 matches last night that would be hotly contested, 4 Nittany Lions had 4 Hawkeyes on their shoulder blades, counting lights.

Not sure what the ref was up to.

It's not out of the question that Beard might not even qualify, even Shak is slightly behind the 8 ball in this respect. Neither 'might' have enough matches so it might come down to big 10s where Beard could draw Colin Moore in the first round. (Beard has 10 tourney matches so far, how many qualify if he pulls his shirt? Also I guess he would then drop into the rankings and get a seed at big 10s??? Someone explain please). With some bad luck we could burn his shirt for nothing. Unlikely for sure but not impossible. Am I all wet on this one?

Yep and Cael said he wanted to find out where we were at. After what he saw last night I think everyone knows a title is not out of the question at all.

A title was never out of the question but nothing I saw last night indicates we have closed the gap in terms of NCAA scoring. In a dual meet RBY getting the default/fall against DeSanto is a 9 point swing where the winning team scored 19 points, so a HUGE difference. If at NCAAs RBY now finishes 2nd and AD 4th (vs AD 2nd & RBY 4th) the swing is only 6 points where the winning team is scoring around 130 points, so really only a minor difference. Things can and do change but right now we are still well behind Iowa in NCAA scoring on paper. Luckily the only scores that count are the final ones. My point is just that a close score in the dual last night doesn;t mean we have closed the gap in terms of NCAA scoring.

My key takeaways:

1) very encouraged. On paper this was not supposed to be a 2 point match. I saw a lot of good things.

Brandon - coming away from a match with superman, fighting off his back several times and giving up only 5 was a plus

RBY looked very confident and got jobbed by the ref
I assume he must have stopped the match the first time due to AD crying out while not seeing anything dangerous. In any case 2+ points stolen. The second time much the same but I think this was proof AD has a tough time dealing with not being 100%. I have a suspicion he tweaked something in practice and his knee was in his head at the start.

Nick was dominant and impressive as expected and if the ref was in position, might have gotten the fall. No matter he is awesome.

Verk - given the rankings, it was a solid match but he looses by a few against virtually anyone that is ranked. If you don't shoot you don't win, and Verk is WAY to defensive no matter who he faces.

Bo - very nice effort to keep it to a decision

Cenzo - very solid but still too much upper body with a kid who I believe is slightly stronger and an inche or two shorter. You go to that well to many times and.... VJ has more wrestling skill I think he should out wrestle Alex next time out

Admittedly, Mark Hall's match was a bit of a shocker. Mark has so much experience I just didn't see this once coming and he was a bit sloppy. I have 100% confidence he will adjust accordingly and remains the favorite for a championship.

Brooks - very solid match. The headlock was a bit scary to start but he fought it off well. The kids is a stud and keeps learning and getting better. Top 4 is definitely in play.

Shak - Not a terrible match for sure but he is clearly not himself. Another month is a long time. He has a real shot to help the team immensely but will need to conquer the demons in his head.

Seth - About what I expected. Iowa found a diamond in the rough with Cassi who is top 4. Seth can definitely AA, and needs to come March.

2) If anything I think Iowa demonstrated that they are mortal against a foe down 3 starters (including Shak). "IF" we can find a way to get an effective Berge back and Shak improves, we can do this, and Iowa now knows it.

I think if we can just have Berge back at 100%. I think that would be enough and if Shak can make al least half a recovery and make a little noise, I think that might be enough this year?

We'd still need some things to break our way--but, well, that's what we do, right?

Wondering if his yellow and black, hawkeye underwear was showing?

My friend said Joe Lee reminds him a bit of Micah Jordan when watching him at the Scuffle. His inability to get out was his undoing ultimately but his offense is fantastic.

Micah Jordan's bottom woes were chronic. Joe Lee is obviously still a RS Freshman. Kind of an odd comparison by your friend. Tons of RS frosh have that issue.

Joe comes from a good gene pool.

In his first season, Nick Lee’s weakest position was bottom (true of many freshmen). It was by far the biggest hole in his game. If Joe’s work rate and desire to improve are anything like his big brother’s, he’s going to be very good.

If someone wants to compare a true freshman to a national finalist and 3x AA who never finished below R12, let's not nitpick.

That was kinda my point. I just don't see JL as being that guy that has chronic bottom woes in the future. To compare the 2 seemed premature. And yes, true freshman, not RS frosh, my bad.
