Southern Scuffle Quarters Thread

Big (placement) points to be had from here on out. For those less familiar with tournament scoring, a win in the next round of championships is worth 6 points for your team, if you're a scorer. Can't finish worse than 6th. Two more wins in wrestle-backs, or a quarterfinal loss in the championship bracket, followed by 1 win in wrestle-backs, and it's 3 points, as you can't finish lower than 8th.

Sad to see Cutch and Cortez go down with what looked like serious injuries. The only upside to that is that if this team could afford to suffer any injuries, it was at 141 and 197. That's little comfort to Cutch and Cortez, though perhaps they make it back.

Saddens me too...a bunch. Here's one nugget that I know about this team, though...they'll all step up. Got each other's back, so to speak.

Thanks that's way better than an injury but I would have loved to see him wrestle Cruz
Yeah, it's a shame what matches this weekend could have brought us at 125 but didn't. Nationals will be a big mystery with so many contenders who haven't faced each other, especially if Iowa burns Lee's shirt.

As a fan of the sport, I agree.

As a PSU fan, this might work out better for us. Keeps alive the possibility of Cruz getting the #1 seed at nationals -- just need Tomasello and RU to split matches this year to keep them both in the other half of the bracket.

I admire this post...El-Jefe playing chess, while many others are playing checkers.

I hadn't thought of the keeping NATO out of the finals plan. That would be huge if it happens. Did anybody play the "Nick Lee slapped the Cheek" card or was I the only person who found hearing the word Cheek fifteen times during a wrestling match hard to resist?

you would expect anything less from the individual that first posted the outlines of the PSU wrestling plan for Total World Domination? Of course, CS and staff were ahead of El-Jefe. However, they may have gotten an idea or two from El-Jefe's outline, or the discussion that sprung from that post. ;)

Wait, are you saying the coaches had a plan?

For Keener to place...
-- First, beat Rudy Yates (#100 in WrestleStat)
-- Then likely gets Sean Nickall (Cal-Bak), #57 in WrestleStat -- I believe this to be a closely contested bout, win here and...
-- That gets him guaranteed 8th.
-- Next bout will likely be Nathan Boston (Campbell, #44 WrestleStat), and another closely contested bout, imo, win here and...
-- He's guaranteed 6th.

not only out of the finals but lets say the guy out east beat him and he drops to consi. Then spencer or Cruz or someone else not cutting 20lbs on a bum leg, beats him.....its huge for the team race.

lmao ... you are on your A game this evening. The Mummers inspired you?
Nope, can't say I'm much of a fan of them.

Actually what's inspiring me (other than the team + the Breaking Bad marathon) is doing some prelim legwork for 2018 travel. I'm taking at least 2 significant vacations this year, Asia in the winter/spring, then somewhere worthy of a milestone birthday trip in the fall.

Another hypothetical: If Mark beats BoJo, does Mark get the 1 seed at NCAAs with BoJo having to get through Z?

Heckuva question -- because it'll mean having beaten Jordan 2x. Zahid has already beaten Jordan 2x, 9-4 and 9-6. Guessing Hall will have to beat Jordan similarly or by more. He may also have a better overall schedule by the end of B10s.

Definitely want The 1 seed in that weight class. Let them 2 Duke it out

That will be interesting to watch.

In the regular season, Hall only has 2 tough bouts on the schedule: Myles Amine on 1/12, and BoJo on 2/3.

Zahid has Ethan Ramos on 1/6, and Jordan Kutler on 2/9. I'm not sure who he might face at the Virginia Duals.

Yeah I agree we want Mark to have the 1 seed, I am just saying, Mark would be the returning champ with the only real win against Z, but Z beat Mark in the All Star event this year and appears to be ranked #1.

Yes but remember hall has beaten Kutler once already and could see him here.

If they have Cutch's back then maybe that's the problem. Give it back to the guy!
