Southern Scuffle Quarters Thread

Rasheed looked good! I heard his knee was bothering him before that match but he definitely didn’t show any sign of it. Did notice a bigger knee pad on it though.

Yes, oldcougar, you and I were probably not too broken up by that result. Great kid, great story for a kid who has gotten an opportunity to get a degree when that was pretty unthinkable when they first got him involved in the sport in 7th grade. Very, very nice kid, my son wrestled him more than a few times what seems like an eon ago.
I bet you would have settled for a strolling with Stoll 2-1 win over Boykin than that entertaining 3-4 loss right? Damn f** haters!:p

That’s why all the comments are saying Nick needs to put on another 15 pounds or so. Doesn’t seem like anyone would be content with that outside of Iowa.

Umm, other than for Iowa fans, that match was entertaining?

Please don't repeat the lameness, I beg you.

Only an Iowa fan would consider the Nevills-Boykin bout as"entertaining". You're trying way too hard.

My wedding anniversary is during nationals. Someday maybe ... preferably when our anniversary isn't on the weekend. Not this year though.
Who in world gets married during nationals?

I can understand not suggesting Cleveland mid March as a romantic get away for an anniversary, but New York City should've worked.

I do feel your pain to a point. My wife's birthday is the end of February. I haven't been to a districts tournament in a long time now.

Even in Nevills wins over Wood and Kasper he is relying on his riding for that extra point. Today it bit him. He was on his way to winning until a sloppy mat return he lost his balance and Boykin reversed him. Looked like an OT match was coming until Boykin got the TD. Nick looks worse on his feet with the added weight. Last year he seemed more fluid and was getting to legs more often. Time to lay off the weights and trim down. Just my take.

The weight gain was intentional. The deadlifts, squats and cleans have his core pretty freaking strong.

He wrestled like crap. Sick maybe. I do not know. He has not been offensive. From top or neutral. Hopefully this is a wake-up, pull head out of rear end and get serious moment.

Whatever is going on, the issue isn't weight nor strength.

We moved up the wedding on short notice when she got laid off, lost her health insurance, and needed mine.

Had a choice of 2 weekends, the other being PA States. And she insisted on spending the weekend at the Hotel Hershey.

So that's how it happens.

He also never pushes forward like a top heavyweight. It’s a weird weight class dominated typically by one superior stud and a lot of guys with potential. That one top guy is always more athletic and can move, really move. Single leg, double leg, duck under, ankle pick, etc. not just reaching for a thigh and hoping he can pull it in. I am sure he is strong as an ox.

The more athletic guy in this class is always way more confident as well. I would love to see a heavy that is light on his feet with some confidence. Yes, I realize there are very few of those.

I'm not sure if you're referring to his neutral wrestling or mat wrestling when you suggest that he doesn't push forward. From the top position, I think Nick does a VERY good job of keeping his weight forward and making it difficult for the other guy. From neutral, I don't see wrestling like Tony Nelson to necessarily be a huge advantage unless you like winning 1-0 or 2-1 bouts. I DO think Nick needs a wake-up moment, but I'm not sure that I agree with you about what the issue is.

He needs to become less round and way more athletic. Lose 15 pounds while building core and muscle strength along with endurance.
Not picking on you but I've seen a few people say he needs to drop 15 lb.

Perhaps a great idea -- for the offseason.

Terrible idea for during the season. He does not need to think about weight mgmt for the next 2 months, when he should be thinking about Snyder, Coon, Stoll, etc.

He needs to generate offense at his current weight.

If he happens to shed a few lb naturally from working out, good -- but not at the expense of his focus or energy level.

I see Nick as anywhere between a 2-6 placewinner who likely scores a bonus point or 2. This match doesn't change my view. Need the big five to do what they do-Nick to place- and either 133,141,or 197 to AA and it will be more than tOSU can match.

Hey @billrag, absolutely was referring to neutral. I agree on the wake up moment as well and enjoy reading everyone weighing in with different ideas.

Thing with hwt for our guys, is we might see one generational talent graduate (snyder) only to welcome the next in Gable S. Both have no fear of shooting on big guys. Both are athletic as all get out for their size and both dont get run down by the grind.

Today will be interesting to see how nick rebounds. If Boykin is his only loss on the tournament, probably not that huge of a deal he and the coaches know scoring points is the right way to win.

@El-Jefe Who's been teaching Nick the Tony Stallson method? Jake Varner? If so, he needs to stop it...and fast!
Seriously doubt he's being coached that way -- if so, he's the only one.

He could probably stand to have a better workout partner. Cael and Jake are as good as it gets but can't spend all their time with him. Maybe Jan Johnson will help now that football season is over.

If he can't score more then he's probably not beating Coon -- in which case getting Snyder in the national semis doesn't matter much. For quarters there's little difference in being seeded anywhere 3-6, just need to stay above 7 to not see Snyder or Coon until the semis.

So it still boils down to attacking and scoring more.

The vast majority of the big guys do seem to have a hard time getting an angle on their shots so they don't shoot much out of fear of getting stretched out of position and giving up the takedown. Not surprisingly, the last 4 champs (Snyder and Gwiz) were/are very active because they were able to create angles and shoot a lot more then your usual heavyweight.

I disagree. A man his size, working out as much as he does, could lose 10 pounds over 2 months without blinking if he just adjusted his diet slightly.

Yeah, but if they’re still serving up chicken cosmos at the dining hall... that would have to be some serious discipline. ;)

Totally agree with this. When I was playing football and wrestling in high school and college, I would gradually lose a bit of weight (like 10 lbs.) during the last month of football season so I would have less to cut when wrestling started. I never noticed any negative impact

Nevills has been terrible on his feet this season and looks slow. Time to take off those "good" pounds.

If his diet is an issue, then I agree. See the last paragraph of the quoted comment you disagreed with. Though diet issue is not a small presumption to make.

BTW 10 lb is a goalpost shift from the cited "drop 15 lb" comments.

The reason for Thompson coming back to the NLWC was to give Nick a high quality big man to wrestle with.

Did he lose significant weight overnight? Or did he choose to attack more today?

You mean against Voss? He is more aggressive against inferior opponents. When he wrestles even top 20 guys, his neutral offense virtually disappears.

I did 10 pounds over the period of a month. Nevills has more extra weight (by the eye) and two months until March. I'd like to see him 15 pounds lighter by then.

This is exactly my point. Regardless of his weight, he needs to choose to score more.

While the points/ bonus isn't there yet this year, Nevills has wins over Flo's No. 4, 5, 7, 10 and 20 ranked HWTs. I haven't compared but he probably has the most high quality wins on the team.
