U17 Worlds

But you're forgetting the Levi, Mesenbrink, Facundo jam up. One of them will be taking a redshirt this year - so you're not exactly getting rid of the problem.

Between 157-285 you have 8 wrestlers for 6 weights (that are all top ten recruits)

Haines SO
Sealey high school senior
Mesenbrink FR
Facundo SO
Barr FR
Ryder high school senior
Mirasola high school senior
Mirasola high school senior
If you assume Kasak at 149, then you can add him and Van Ness and we have 10 wrestlers for the 7 weights from 149 to 285

Or 8 wrestlers for the 5 weights between 149 and 184.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of the portal for PSU isn't incoming transfers but because high schoolers know there isn't a ton to risk with shooting their shot anymore at PSU. You come here, you believe with the coaching and room, you are the best in the nation so you aren't worried about jams.

You don't win the spot? No issues, you take what you learned here and go elsewhere.

Joe Bachmann is no doubt very good but he lost to Dom Deputy earlier this summer and Deputy took 6th at the US open with Kenny winning the weight. Deputy lost to Munnaretto and got teched by Sledzianowski. Both good guys but Kenny beat them both at the open. Styles make matches so maybe Bachmann matches up well with Kenny or maybe Kenny has made a jump. Either way, he’s a world champion.
Your whole “case” seems to go through one match. What makes you think that wasn’t just an off day or the bad style matchup for JB?

His whole case does not go through one match. It was a response to the surprise that Kenny won World Gold in the same bracket that Bachmann took 3rd. It was citing another example of Kenny performing at or above his level.

It seems clear that the two (Kenny, and Bachmann) are wrestling on a similar tier, in freestyle at least. At Worlds, Kenny won the day. Maybe in folkstyle this year the results will be reversed, maybe, maybe not.

The 12 matches in a row thing carries little weight. That probably goes back to when they were in elementary school. Different kids have different arcs. It will carry NO weight this December when both enter HS competition. IMO they will both be challenged by older kids in their respective states.

That's if the 12 matches in a row thing is even true. "My friend's dad said" is not exactly credible evidence.

I read Z’s post as an argument against somebody who said Bachmann is purt near unbeatable, not so much that he was surprised by Kenny.

I was writing it in regards to Kenny. The OP made it sound like Bachmann would have easily been our rep if he wanted with his 12-0 record against Kenny. I said Bachmann is very good but just not sure he woudve won the U17 trials. Seemed like he was discounting what Kenny just did

Bachmann is very, very, good, but would have had his hands full at the US Open U17. If you'd have wrestled the Open multiple times at least 3 or 4 kids might have won, and any would have been toss-ups against Bachmann, Kenny or Munerratto.

I think that people tend to get a little over their skis with some ot these barely pubescent wrestlers. Joey B might very well win 4 PIAAs titles, but it's far from a sure thing that he'll win his first as a freshman. Whether he does or doesn't, it won't have much bearing on how he does the following year or in college - he'll likely succeed in both.

The difference in age and maturity is so much more varied now for freshmen than it used to be that you really need to know a lot more about each kid's age, maturity and experience before projecting too far. Even then, I think that it's more of a crapshoot than it used to be as there are talented sophomores just turning 15 who haven't broken out yet, and world beating freshmen who are 16 and farther along in their development. Problem is that it's hard to know which is which unless you make a profession out of it, and I don't think the professional wrestling media does a particularly great job of that with HS kids.
