Match Thread Nebraska dual - Sun, Feb 18

It definitely makes it harder. You have to have everything set up before reaching for the leg. Hate that new rule…

Once exposed in a pinning combination, the 5 count goes away. BTW, why do they not start count on cradle? You have upper-body control as well as ankle in Bow--&-Arrow every bit as much as a cradle. If you have upper-body control, the count is stupid - you should be permitted to grab ankle if you have upper-body control. The count should only apply if your sole point of control is below the waist.

Yup.

I don’t understand how a person could run a bow and arrow anymore unless the bottom guy is just terrible. So you have to get to “exposure” to get the count to stop?!

I’ve seen numerous counts started on cradle attempts this year.

Between that and the 3PT TD…..it’s as if the objective of Wrestling….to pin your opponent….isnt the objective anymore. That’s just weird.

Call stalling correctly….like CStar on top, legs on top of Smith with no interest in a turn…and you’ll either get action or a DQ.

He has a dece

he has a decent sweep single and a pathetic left side ankle puck attempt. That’s it!!!! After seeing his limited arsenal anyone close to decent make adjustments rendering his offense impotent. In a room like psu not being able or willing to expand on this limited offense is very disappointing.

3 trips to NCAAs, three consolation finals appearances. 🤔
Yeah, after three straight 4th place finishes, and watching him this season, it seems like he’s likely to finish about 4th. At Penn State, everyone is measured against the champions, so a 4th-caliber wrestler Is disappointing. It is what it is. He has flaws, but he’s definitely good enough to make a deep run at nationals anyway, but probably not win.

I think he has two on the season?
Correct.......Davis has 2 official losses on the year. Some/many will argue that it should be 3 counting the Ohio State match. Still..........if they told you in early November that True Freshman Davis would be our 125 lber and would only have 2 or 3 losses on the year.......most people would call you crazy.....absolutely crazy.

Davis was in a 1-1 match (after a strong ride) against a slick opponent and his YOLO mentality gave up 7 which obviously broke him. He lost a 1 TD match to Ayala who went defensive at Carver. Yes - he should have lost to Kilkeary but that would be the only bad loss, a kid he has history with.

He is what he is, a tough true freshman taking his lumps. His win over Peterson was legitimate (controversial because the video didn't work but anyone watching live knows it wasn't a TD for Peterson) One thing I'll say the, the kid isn't short on confidence. He has wins over multiple tough opponents including Kaylor, DeAugustino, Berginc, Lujan x2, etc.

All in all, with 125 this year, he gives us a chance. I prefer him being written off honestly than him being talked about as one of the favorites, that might bring back some of his swagger.

A little off topic, but not really. If anyone turned on the BTN channel a little earlier before the PSU dual, you would have caught a good post match interview with Real Woods. Right behind him, some young boy was really hamming it up in front of the camera. I thought it was pretty amusing.

Gibbles chips. Cooked in lard.
Gibbles use to be great then stopped making them. The snack community went nuts but when they brought them back - not the same. The Diffenbaugh family who made Gibbles has there own brand which is good. Anyone remember a brand called Sticks?

Who was the big dude in the white top beside the PSU coaches. He was really into it and was high fiving the guys as the came off the mat.

Kerk could take this guy down at will. No need to ride for 4 minutes.
Imagine if someone in that room taught him the bow and arrow for crying out loud! Every match he finishes with 3+ mins of riding time minimum. Stop working the wrists and go for some Zain pain.

Nagao and Truax - sam ting

They can
Is the bow and arrow that difficult of a move to perform? I watch Levi and Mitchell both ride real strong on top but neither one seems to try this move. What am I missing?
Both MM and Levi are pretty damned good turning guys without it, what stand out to me is there are at least three other tough top riders on our team that can't turn worth a damn most of the time. I don't get it, Zain and Max patented it. Where would Max have been without it. How many close matches where he snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat in the third with just that move alone?

Nagao gets the double boots in and punished but is hardly able to turn with his half nelson, never against really good competition.

Truax can get a really strong ride going and with the legs in that foot is just begging to get grabbed. And ... Nothing

Kerk can smash anyone from top but honest to god, working for wrists for 3, 4, 5 minutes is going to get a stall call sooner or later under the new rules. After he gets his 1:30 of riding time just play catch and release those extra 3 minutes of riding time gets you very little, and the wrong ref will stop it and restart or penalize him eventually.

Every kid on the team should have the bow and arrow in their tool box. They have the best practitioners in the country in the room every day to work on the finer details. I just don't get it???

Those Brand's brothers are always looking for more ways to get their face on TV.

I am thrilled with Davis, he wasn't even expected to start this year and we final have a national qualifier unless the wheels completely fall off at Bigs. Noone has any idea what's going to happen at that weight class, and the draw at nationals is going to be huge. He could get screwed majorly or have a nice set up. He has all the makings of a R16 pretty much for sure, and if he peaks he could probably surprise anyone in the bracket. AA is totally in play and lightning in the bottle could get him into the semis. Regardless of what points he does or does not deliver at nationals I am totally satisfied with what he has given us as an impromptu starter as a true freshman. The curse has been lifted IMO.

The bow and arrow looks to be getting phased out. They start a count the second you grab the foot so what’s the point in using it right now.

My 2 cents, davis is what we thought he is a solid potential aa but maybe a seat warmer for grease lightning next year, nagau is better than he has shown. Bartlett just keeps on beating the best in his Weight class, kasak will make a run at nationals, Levi is rounding into form, mitch the twitch is the 3rd best wrestler in his weight class, I like him vs kot but not vs Carr if that makes sense. Carter next topic, Bernie well he a point getter a nationals and keeps Josh in red shirt, Brooks next topic and ditto for Greg.
Not sure (at all) what you're trying to say about Truax.

1) best dual i've seen all year. that's what wrestling is about. both teams were active and offensive with perhaps the exception of Silas and Nash, who were just outgunned. on the down side, it makes me frustrated that we don't see more duals like this where two teams just throw down.

2) Davis just needs offense. the kid is a warrior. i love him. the good news is that (and i just said this on a pod w/ Basch) no one at 125 has much offense this year.

3) chill out on Bernie. Pinto is a horse and really different feel.

4) stop talking about manning. he's my friend.

5) anyone remember Charles' Chips?

3. Agree. I don't mind that loss, at all. Truax got a feel for him for next time around.
4. If he's your friend, oh, we're gonna talk about your friends.

QtipHead the fit thrower. He was worse than the cry baby brands brothers last night.

Sticks were my go to chip in college.

I got last second tickets and made it to the dual. I thought we gave a solid effort at every weight. The results weren't what I hoped for at 125, but, it wasn't for lack of effort.

Rec Hall had a nice atmosphere yesterday. Why do the least knowledgeable fans seem to be the loudest? The loudest two guys in our section clearly didn't know much about wrestling and couldn't pronounce some of our guys names. That isn't just a complaint from this dual, but, from many of my trips to Rec Hall. Listen, I don't expect all fans to be wrestling nuts like me and many others on this forum, but, if you aren't that knowledgeable, why be so loud and proud?

Anyway, some quick thoughts per weight class:

125 - The score isn't a reflection of the match. He got caught in a bad situation and gave up the major by not giving up and "going for the gusto"

133 - Solid effort by Shunk in a match where he was simply out-gunned

141 - I absolutely loved seeing Beau aggressive right off the whistle. Great performance against a really good wrestler

149 - I continue to be incredibly impressed with Kasak. He gets better and better every single match, and he is extremely strong, which is impressive considering some were worried about whether he could handle coming up to 149.

157 - Haines is turning it on at the right time. He is going to be extremely hard to score on. His reaction combined with his hips are tough to get past.

165 - He is going to give up some takedowns with his in your face style (like Nolf) and he definitely tweaked something in his ribs early, but, he just keeps going and going and going like the Energizer bunny. Even with a regular decision, he is must see TV.

174 - I think Carter is over whatever bug he had. He looked like his always dominant self.

184 - I actually loved the fight in Bernie. Pinto is a beast. The fact that Bernie was so close at the end was a good thing in my book. On most kids, he gets that takedown.

197 - Brooks is a joy to watch with his flawless technique. He is all class all the time too.

285 - I actually don't mind the strategy that Kerkvliet took with the riding. First, the only way we lose the dual is if he gets caught and pinned, which wasn't going to happen with him on top. Second, Hut is a big boy, and I wouldn't want to see him get an injury. It was intelligent and dominating.

Great stuff and I had a good time. I LOOK FORWARD to watching their next match, BIG's and the show in KC!

yes, he was going nuts when Levi started pulling away. pretty cool to see that level of investment from an AD

he's been in that same spot for multiple duals this year.
He's been in that spot for all of the home duals at Rec this year; and most, if not all, last year.. So refreshing to see his genuine support and enthusiasm. He recognized Cael in his intial press conference after taking the job which was music to my ears.

April 22, 2022: “I need to talk to Cael [Sanderson, wrestling head coach] and see how he’s done it so consistently,” Kraft quipped. “He’s the GOAT.”

Nebraska wrestled like that against Michigan, too. That match was definitely fun, and all five of the lightweight matches were hard fought and really entertaining (highlighted by Lovett’s beatdown of Gomez). Nebraska was up 5-0 at the break just a week after Michigan beat Iowa 5-0 in the lightweights.

At the start of the season, I said I expected Nebraska to be second both in the B1Gs and the NCAAs. Then they got torched by Iowa and I relented a little, but they look to be peaking for the postseason.

I went to match yesterday. Purchased some SRO tickets. Enjoyed standing more than being a sardine trying to sit. After match ended I went down to floor level. I saw Davis talking to a gentleman that I would guess was his father. Looking at size of Davis and his young features it looked like what you would see at a high school match. If I had to guess his inability to score recently is probably related that opponents and coaches have figured out some of his tendencies. Davis and coaches will adjust.

As a Husker fan, I can agree with almost all of that. At 141 though, Bartlett was saved by the official. He waited until the TD was eminant, to stop the match for potential danger, as Bartlett was feigning knee injury. He seemed fine running off the mat just moments later.

Good post, seems to me you know wrestling 😉
Pinto was underrated in highschool. He was funky and strong. District 11 fans and coaches knew about him but he didn't get much coverage out of area .
Manning is what he is on the mat. From what I hear off the mat he's a good guy. How many more years before Snyder takes over.?
Charles Chips at one time had door to door service in Mt Bethel. Put the tan color can on front porch and they would deliver a fresh canister once a week.
We also had Stocker Brothers/ Lehigh Valley Dairy milk box on porch for delivery.
Different times.😕

Yea, the same Ref that called some for being pushed OB while in Neutral ties, but didn't call it other times, somehow didn't believe it was stalling to intentionally put your foot off the mat OB for the sole purpose of avoiding being taken down??? What Smith did was definitely Stalling as cited as an example in the Rulebook and should have been called as such.
refs making some bad calls a guy gets pushed out of bounds and he get the stall that was all wrong the pusher should get the stall!
