PSU vs Cal-Bakersfield COMMENTS Thread

Cali, why did they have the fans all sit on one side of the arena?
Was the PA announcer as hilarious as I could hear from the stream?
Am I taller than you?

Yeah he was all confused though - he was announcing the wrong guy up half the time. He had his entertaining moments though...

I was told that originally they were only doing one side of the gym and then they opened up the other side when it got filled up. I took the $20 option for "premium" seats and landed 3 feet from the PSU bench and right in front on the corner - best $20 I ever spent!!!

That is great cali!

I noticed a lot of PSU shirts once they opened up the other side.

Gulibon vs. Nickel

1st
Gulibon with a quick TD, 2-0. Stalemate at 2:30. Jimmy riding well. And esc at 1:15, 2-1. Jimmy in on a low single, Nickle tries to reach over, and then after rolling thru Jimmy gets the TD, 4-1. The Roadrunner announcer is pretty bad. 1 min left in period. Jimmy working from the side, near the edge of the mat. OOB with 24 sec. Jimmy rides out

2nd
Nickel defers, and Jimmy takes neutral. Nickel reaches for a leg, Jimmy nearly gets a leg with a coutner, now Jimy in on a re-shot but Nickel reaching across, then Jimmy gets control and the TD, 6-1. Stalemate at 1:10. Perhaps a stall warning on Jimmy. (You miss a few things when you try to type during the action.) Jimmy riding on the side and in control. He rides him out.

3rd
Nickel takes top. Jimmy trying to work up, Nickel throws in a leg, Jimmy is kind of extended. 30 sec in. Nice crossface by Nickel, though it goes across the throat but no call. Stalemate after 1:01 of riding. Caution on Jimmy for starting too soon. Jimmy up fast and out in 2 sec, 7-1. Jimmy witgh a couple of shots, and OOB with 11 sec left. Jimmy shoots again, countered. End, 7-1

PSU up 7-0

Jimmy looks, early in the season, as someone not sure how to handle the bump up in weight class. He seems tentative and unsure of himself.

That's just my observation. Any other thoughts?

honestly...I think Jimmy's opponent isn't getting enough credit here. Jimmy controlled a pretty solid kid. He's a RS SR that went 1-2 at Nationals last year that's 7-1 to start this year. Someone else posted on another thread that he's held some other pretty tough opponents to tight scores too...Jimmy may still have some adjusting to do at the new weight, but last nights match shouldn't be a cause for concern.

No secret that I don't have the wrestling knowledge of many here, but it looked like the team was even more legs-focused than usual last night. The guys that are more likely to go upper body didn't push for it. (1) Is my observstion off base or, (2) were our opponents trained to avoid ties, etc, , or (3) does the staff ever set a team-wide goal of stressing one part or our offense?

Gulibon just beat a national qualifier 8-1. Tough crowd.

I'm not trying to be critical. I don't know much about the sport in terms of technique. I like the sport and try to ask questions to gain insight. I like Jimmy a lot and route very hard for him to be successful. I was a big fan of his in high school and hope for him to have similar success in college.
