don't think they started this one. if there's a coach to be blamed for stoking the fires, it was telford v. st. john. telford took exception to the shove during cass's match and they were chirping pretty good. also looked like the isu kids started the shoving in response to some taunting about the stall out at the end. i use the term "shoving" pretty loosely. pretty mild imo.
Breaking news: penn state fan call a two time all american wrestler, who lost his first match back from injury "overrated". This man was also seen referring to murins brief celebration as "celebrating like he won an national championship" gotta love bad takes lol
Lol, this started way before heavyweight. Eierman rubbing head in the mat and sticking his tongue out. Desanto typical behavior. Brands constant chirping throughout the match. Yiu can’t cover the entire floor in tinder and then say you didn’t start the fire.
i love how you ignore that isu escalated at every opportunity. desanto with walks his guy an extra step or two out of bounds and gets an elbow to the temple. isu coaches and wrestlers were chirping all match too. not my style, but i'm also not going to act like it was one sided or a disgrace to the sport.
You do realize the match is available for anyone with ESPN+ to watch. I watched it. If you think that "celebration" was typical of winning a National Championship.....please send me some of what you were partaking in while watching said match. I've gotten more excited after a colonoscopy. WAIT......that didn't come out right. Wait.....I was just glad it was over....a happy ending....Wait... I was misquoted.......Forget it
Your coach pulled a Gilman after the dual and got in the middle of the wrestlers. Was it a heated dual, sure. Did the Brands cross the line, undoubtedly.
I just watched that action. "Extra step or two?" How about out of the circle, off the mat, and all the way to the scorers' table? I wouldn't be surprised that Attasauev turned and threw that elbow to keep from getting pushed into the table.
Desanto doesn't know how to stop when he goes out of bounds. That's a serious issue.
It would be serious if DeSanto made the National Finals. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about that happening.
I thought the Brands were “doing the best with the cards they were dealt”? Brands AND DeSanto, here on video, exuding class.

I watched almost the entire match. Missed 125 and most of 133. Desanto did Desanto things. There are pictures of him on twitter giving either the ISU bench or fans ( maybe both ) the middle finger. That stuff is fine to do in a friendly environment when competing, but when its game time, there is and should be a level of professionalism. While not quite on the same level for me, Eierman sticking his tongue out at the ISU bench is also uncalled for. Win and lose with the same attitude. I am fine with getting the crowd pumped up or doing some sort of small celebration AFTER the win, but during the match, it should be all business imo. I thought Carr and Marinelli were class acts. Came out, handled their business and other than Carr having a smirk, and a small celebration towards the crowd, went back to the bench. I really feel like everything escalated during 97. Good match with Bastida securing the win late in the match, then slams his headgear and walks around the mat flexing. I get it, you just beat the number 3 ranked kid. But that was his first match back, and I believe at that point, the match is out of reach. Once again, win and lose with the same mind set. Cass comes out, looks great, and stalls his kid out. I think the ref was indeed ready for the night to be over, because I don't know if some of those stall calls were warranted. I actually thought Schuyler was doing an ok job at opening up, but whatever.
I get it, they're young adults, they don't always have the best judgement. We ALL make mistakes. I like things that build the sport, but not like this. I'm glad it ended before anything major happened, but that could have gotten ugly in a hurry. Both coaching staffs are to blame imo. Brands and Dresser both knew what was going on. They both could hear the kids jawing back and forth. When I wrestled and we had a heated match, before we shook hands, our coaches always told us "mouths shut", and we knew what practice was going to be like had we not listened. In the end, its over and done with, and hopefully calmer heads will always prevail.
In other news, how about Tony Negron?! Excited to see this kid's progress and what else he can deliver.

I am sorry. I watched this as well. The only "action" I see is someone pushing Brands briefly. Then the post ends. I watched the entire action on ESPN+ and I saw NEITHER Brands doing anything physical. Can't hear what may have been said but Mineo's take is pure speculation. At least he didn't steal his speculation from someone else without credit
. Seriously......the Brands are highly animated and have deserved criticism on more than one occasion but.....lets stick to the facts on the video. Desanto?? He is a pistol and they know it. Notice how they went to grab Desanto as he was pushing his opponent into the table....only to start yelling when his opponent fired an elbow to the head. "It was the Best of times....It was the worst of Times". They do entertain

and Derek St John had a smirk and a small arm shove to knock Terry off balance a bit. Big deal. Looks like Terry has an arm out shaking hands at the end of that clip.Mineo sure is after Iowa and DeSanto. He is finding anything he can on the internet to take them down. I'm glad the internet and Pat weren't around during some of the old Iowa/ISU duals where PBS was the only media around. I remember a couple of those duals getting wild when I was a kid.
But these things seem to only happen with Iowa.
In regards to Warner, I agree with you. I’ve been around long enough to remember Hawk fans saying Warner was destined to win multiple national titles when he was recruited and signed with Iowa. So yeah, he was overrated back then…not so much now.
so, i did not see terry run over there right away on the tv and am seeing it now. what i saw last night was the brands brothers pulling guys out of the melee and telford in the middle of it. a couple things:
1) he does this after most duals and it's not confrontational. he runs across the mat, shakes hands and runs off. you can see him trying to shake hands on the video. DSJ starts the shoving. i don't think terry was trying to start something. he was just doing his usual post match thing. he's a bit of a weirdo
2) doing so in that situation was extremely poor judgment. tempers were flaring all night on both sides and the isu just got stalled out. isu was in no mood to have terry brands on their bench. i am not the terry fan that many hawk fans are. he crosses the line and makes me nervous. tom walks the line very well imo. i don't feel like tom ever loses control of himself.
if you listen to dresser's post-match comments, it's pretty clear isu had a big role in the shenanigans tonight and that it was intentional. the metaphor he went back to over and over again was punching a bully in the mouth. whatever the results of the matches were, they weren't going to leave that arena without feeling like they stood up for themselves. that's why you saw their guys escalate. a shove from iowa was answered with an elbow. schuyler shoved cass while his back was turned.

The part I don't like that we continue to hear is that DeSanto doing DeSanto things. Then, when someone take exception (elbows), the Iowa guys all say ISU escalated. Meaning, "sorry, suck it up and it we want to do things after the whistle, too bad." I like the earlier tinder example...Iowa throws tinder all over the place and then says you started the fire.
Headgear spike 7.0 on the Richter scale. Got some serious altitude on that.

desanto is not worth defending anymore imo. i like watching him wrestle. i hate how nervous i get hoping he won't do something stupid. he wasn't awful last night, but annoying. the elbow was 10x worse than anything he did and the ISU kid is lucky he didn't get tossed. two wrongs don't make a right.
he had a really good run of good behavior for a year and half leading up to ncaa's last year. even handled his tough loss well. i thought he had turned a corner. then it fell apart on day 3 and he's continued to do mildly annoying stuff to start this year. nothing that's crossed the line like past transgressions, but enough to make me nervous every time he takes the mat.
Confronting parents doesn’t cross the line? It apparently did for Brands, unless pulling Desanto away in choke holds is just SOP.
For all the grief I give DeSanto, rightfully so, I have to give Warner a lot of credit for going out of his way to shake Bastida’s hand after that match. Very well done on his part.

Warner is all class all of the time. The headgear spike was uncalled for and Warner still made sure to shake hands and acted like a true sportsman. I will always respect Jacob Warner on and off of the mat. He looses some and wins some against the better guys. He beat Miklus a few years ago to decide the dual and acted humble in victory like he does in defeat. Young, Bull, Kemdog,....all classy good dudes.
I have defended ADS but he and Terry both need meds. This can't keep happening. Gads is such a good mannered dude, but why would a little guy like that run his mouth at a guy doing a broadcast who has defended him and praised him? Terry is insane and it doesn't help ADS. Tom was truly trying to calm things down. They need to fire Terry for so many reasons. He is a scum bag. It isn't Iowa that acts like this- it is Terry Brands and ADS.

At the point the elbow was thrown, the ISU wrestler had been pushed all the way up to the table. What do you think he should have done to prevent getting pushed *through* the table?

(Still pissed that ADS tried to injure Chaz Tucker when the latter had just taken him down at the end of a match to take the lead. Anyone who tries to injure an opponent when frustrated should not be allowed to wrestle any more)
Desanto better enjoy these next 3.5 months because his repercussion free environment is soon to end. The real world won’t be so kind, forgiving, rationalizing, and enabling. The kid is being set up for failure all in the name of wrestling championships. It’s sad.
come on this is not what happened lol. desanto had stopped driving him and was actually signaling 2 to kyven when the elbow came (which is something in its own right lol). he didn't even react to the elbow either. he looked stunned. probably because he was more concerned with kyven than the isu kid when it happened and was confused.
JS, you're a reasonable guy. All I did was watch this live until a few minutes ago. I watched it in slo-motion on ESPN+ a few times. They have a bird's eye view of the entire thing. This is exactly what happened. ADS had the single leg and pulled him back in and secured the take down. They went to a standing position and stepped off the mat. As they stepped off the mat, ADS picked up Attasauov and started walking him off the mat and the ref whistled the action after about 2 steps out of bounds. ADS didn't set Attasauov back down until he walked him about 3 feet onto the hardwood. Then momentum carried them both to the table. Attasauov was partially bent over the table in front of Kyven with ADS still behind him, kind of like the Iowa folk handle their sheep. ADS signaled "2" to Kyven as Attasauov swung his elbow actually up and not back, since he was bent over. It was a "GTFOffMe" kind of move and not one where you are trying to nail someone in the temple.
It was noteworthy that Crazy Terry was right next to ADS throughout the episode cheering him on. After the elbow, Tom came right over and put his arms around Terry and grabbed ADS by the arm and pulled them both back. Tom clearly dressed down ADS, because his head and shoulders slumped immediately and stayed that way as he walked back onto the mat. Meanwhile, the recently released Crazy Terry sprinted back to the ref and was pointing the crazy finger at Attasauov looking for the referee to assess a penalty, which he did to both wrestlers.
That is exactly how it went down.

i've already said desanto shouldn't have done what he did, but the way this is being described is that desanto was in the process of running that kid through the table. old women move faster than they were moving at that point. it's become a cross board discussion at this point with NM, but he's making the claim over on HR that Attasauov had to do it because he was in danger of being put through the table. that's not what was happening. he's a cornell fan who hates desanto because of the tucker incident (and i don't blame him). this was not comparable no matter how much he wants it to be.
desanto is a dick, but this was a disproportionate response imo. if you want to say it was a get off me move, that's reasonable too. i think it was probably a little in between. i'm not that committed to it. but it also wasn't a dangerous situation and people go overboard every time desanto does something dickish. he's frustrating, but he hasn't come close to repeating the micic situation since then.
going forward, desanto needs to lock it down. guys are going to constantly try to bait him. attasauov did it all match with the singlet pulls. he seems way less in control of himself than he was last year prior to ncaas.
JS, wouldn’t Desanto have an easier time locking it down if Terry wasn’t inflaming things?

I see a Brands (pretty sure it was Tom) with DeSanto close behind walk RIGHT PAST Dresser who had his hand clearly out to shake Brands hand. He pats Brands on the back then turns and shakes DeSanto’s.

I noticed that too--it looked like Tom was on a mission to have words with Metcalf and totally snubbed Dresser.
All in all, I enjoyed the heat of this contest. Some lines were crossed, but not egregiously. It's the kind of thing you want to see in this sport. Hot duals are the best. When you have someone like Desanto (or Terry, maybe) on your team though--they certainly can be a liability. I'm glad we haven't seen any real violence in years from him, and hope that continues.
