PSU - Navy Match Thread

60th consecutive dual meet win. I believe they might go for 69 at Iowa this year if the streak continues. 69 in a row is what Iowa achieved a couple of decades back.

Commence "69" jokes now.

In my opinion Teske seems like a great guy and a hard worker but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scratching my head when Cael recruited him. I understand he is a 4x State champ in Iowa, but he never really looked overly impressive to me for the competition he was wrestling, and against other national competition he looked outmatched. I understand him and schnupp are our only options but I just don’t expect any substantial improvement at that weight this season. Overall great win today.

Meredith looked good in the Clarion open would think he is not far behind Teske. He at least shoots and creates offense. Unimpressed with both 125 & 197 today. Rest of the team looked beastly.

I’m holding off judgement about Teske after one dual. Cael’s been right once before. Maybe twice.

Yeah Cael turned Schnupp into an All-American. Cael is the best coach in the country but doesn’t look like getting much from 125 this year.

Love that PA pessimism! Throw in the towel after one match!

Cenzo, Lee, Cassar, Hall, Gardner, and RBY looked great.

Credit to Edsell and Pipher who both moved up, filled in, and pulled out the wins.

Question marks for Conel and Teske.

Byers said new process for deciding starting weight class:

• Whatever weight both coaches agree to
• If they don't agree, they flip a coin and winner picks the weight

Navy won the flip today and picked 141. If I had my druthers, there would never be a coin flip -- just let the home team choose every time. Make it a part of home-mat advantage, in case there were ever a need for some strategery with the lineup. Could only help to make duals more interesting.
Winner picks either; (a) the starting weight, or (b) odd-even bouts.

I believe we will see a lot more duals starting at weights other than the traditional 125. Used to be, a disagreeable coach had a 1-in-10 shot at getting the weight class of their dreams, now it's 50-50. I say this, as imo it's doubtful a coach that wins the flip will go for odd-even bouts too often.

Does flo feed have Ironhead calling it?
Don't recall seeing anyone respond to this: but, yes, Flo had Ironhead calling it. They get their feed from BTN, so whatever's on BTN will be on Flo. I broke down and ordered Flo this year for the first time. The feed was very good, although it seemed like it froze up at the intermission and I reloaded. The quality was exceptional before and after that.

Thought the boys came out and did there thing and excited for another great year.

Congrats to Teske and Conel getting their debut wins. Conel looked a little gassed and had some nerves. He’s a big play guy, and I’m excited for his future. Teske same thing, first match nerves, afraid to let it fly. I’m happy with both.

Luke Gardner? Wow! Could be we have a sleeper. Beating Verk in wrestleoff and now an exciting pin in his debut..awesome stuff.

Pipher and Edsell with nice jobs filling in.

Our hammers looked like, well, hammers..

Do you guys see Gardner retaining the starting spot or is it still kinda up in the air?
Obviously just a guess but I expect it to be competed internally all year. Cael has done that consistently in similar past situations (Rasheed/Cassar, Lawson/Gingrich, etc.)

Gardner performed very well today. If this is who he is against better opposition and every day in the room, he could retain the job.

Next step will be who performs best at the Army tourney.

Gardner beat out Verk for the spot? Hmmm...wonder who coached him to do that since we all know Cael can’t coach.
One way to look at it. Wonder why Cael hasn't been able to do much with cadet world champion Verkleeren? He's been basically the same guy since he got here...

That cradle set up was smooth today. Same ride Schopp used, and now Gross.

The Navy kid - Logan Treaster - that Teske beat today is a JR that was 28-11 lifetime before his match today and 3-0 on the year...his best win was probably last year over Buffalo’s Kyle Akins by decision 4-3. Doesn’t seem like a total pushover for a freshman in his Rec Hall debut...glad to see Teske get his first W as a Lion!

Yet another way to look at it: Verk took 4th at states the March after winning cadet gold.

That's not to knock him, rather to put some context against that world title.

Another: Verk is a preferred walk-on that’s still a young 21

As Luke Gardner was locking up the cradle today. I saw Mark Hall on the bench jumping up and down with excitement for his teammate. Front of the line to congratulate him when he came off the mat too! Always a top notch teammate!

They’re best friends too off the mat. Side note, Remember when Luke had Mark’s back when I-Mar popping off at the mouth after Mark’s loss at Iowa? Well later in the year let’s just say Luke n Baybee Marky had last laugh in that exchange

This - first of all, Treaster wasn't some scrub. Some kind of close win was what I expected from Brody today based on his results in his redshirt year (he lost to Lock Haven's backup 133) Hell, I wouldn't have been totally surprised if he lost today either. Brody is a scrappy wrestler and has plenty of potential and we need to be patient.

We're spoiled at times with some of our hammers coming in and being able to beat anyone basically early in their career but keep in mind, our hammers aren't just champions but HISTORICALLY great multi time champions. Not all our guys (even some of our champs) are due to become that. Let's sit back and enjoy Brody's growth.

A little surprised Gardner didn't get the Riley Award, but Cenzo is a deserving winner.
Cenzo said post match that he has never win the award before! Think about that - 2 time NCAA champ, 3 time finalist and was never the most impressive wrestler in a home dual! Too funny.

cenzo is probably the most under appreciated wrestler in the history of wrestling. Always the 4th or 5th guy talked about for his first 3 years. This year at least he makes top 3!

I am hoping either Schnupp or Teske (or both) can jump levels as the year progresses.

I was reading an article on Michael Macchiavello where he talked about his growth over his career. He was a one time North Carolina state champion in high school and was not thought of as a top recruit. His NCAA career went:

FR 11-14
SO 9-8
RS
JR 10th at the NCAAs
SR NCAA Champion

Just have to trust Cael and the process. Schnupp definitely has heart and Teske is supposed to have a motor that he didn’t show much of today.

It will be interesting to see the results as the year goes by.

Am watching on phone but have sound off as I’m at my in-laws for dinner. Lol

why no Shak??
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Shak pass out at 31 flavors last night.
