Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

Will Mesenbrink's accomplishments be diminished because of lack of competition? I'm not saying it will, but he's going to roll to a title this year and his best competition is Caliendo, Peyton Hall and Barraclough. Maybe Ramirez. Those guys are very good, but their resumes aren't going to stand out.
If over the next three years Messenbrink wrestles another 15 matches and finishes 19-1 with 18 bonus point wins i don't think anyone is going to diminish his greatness.

Clorby (whatever his name is) said on the other site that insults were being hurled at Gabe from the stands.
Just like JB, he had it coming by running his mouth. You don't get to play the victim after running your mouth.

Clorby, Cristina, and Flo suck up to Iowa and will do whatever it takes to remain relevant with that program.

Wrestling on a knee and in reverse allowed him to get under Carter's hands a little. I have to believe adjustments will make his preferred technique less effective as he goes. Ferarri 's flexibility will always serve him well.
The adjustment that needs to be made are by the ref making Ferrari stay towards the middle of the mat. The ref can make a match . This sport can be very entertaining but not when a guy works the edge. I also feel the same when a guy is on top and doesn't try to turn. Kerk is a guy that dominates when riding but is he truly looking to turn.

There are lots of really good college wrestlers who aren't scared of anyone and who think that they CAN beat anyone on any given day but who refrain from making ridiculous promises about a 4-time national champion. I don't make a habit of calling out wrestlers, nor do I hate any of them, but Arnold has made himself a laughing stock.
This ^^^

Agree with that.

But unless he goes in the postseason, what was gained wrestling Ferrari? Meanwhile, Gabe could have gained experience in a big setting against a guy he likely will see at least one more time.

If Ferrari is the guy, then why have we been seeing Gabe at all?

Whole thing just seems shortsighted.
I would think TnT somehow believe that Gabe is right there with Carter and not wrestling last night gives PSU one less data point to use in game planning for Gabe.
Yeah, I know. I didn't say cognitively the logic is brilliant I was taking a stab at it.

Thanks! I got annoyed with Turk a while back and put him on ignore. That’s why I couldn’t see it!

My wife and I had the opportunity to sit next to a gentleman that's been a season ticket holder since 1984. I didn't catch his name, but was great to chat with. The dual was an awesome time and felt like my own personal Super Bowl. Great showing from our guys!!

Ferrari is not the guy.

Bob and Tom know they are not winning it all in 2025. Being short-sighted (as you alluded to), they think they can buy enough guys and keep them healthy enough for a few months to challenge in 2026. Therefore, redshirt Ferrari in ‘25, but give him his one possible sample against an all-time #1 so he experiences/learns firsthand what it means to be dominant in NCAA D1 Wrestling. Then he has all the tools and experience to make a run at greatness next year.

Gabe will be filler in ‘25 and gain valuable experience in the art of total bullshit before he takes the mat for Rutger in ‘26.
I was thinking sending Ferrari out to wrestle Carter was kind of a good deed type of intervention TnT did for Mr. Ferrari. I understand Iowa's Ferrari called both bothers after the match to tell them "my God guys, I experienced man strength tonight. You two need to get on and stay on the straight and narrow. In jail those dudes with the man strength are gonna f you up. Seriously, you both need to stop doing stupid shyt!!!"

I think Greg's 5 pins and 6 tech falls might suggest that he is turning people!

MSU has changed his lab from how to beat PSU to how to keep PSU from scoring 172 points.

There are Penn State haters, and then there is MSU158.

I'm convinced his wife left him for a Penn State wrestler 😂
Could have just been a PSU wrestling fan.

Might have to check that out. Anyway, home from the match. Really not much can be said. If all that money they are spending in Iowa was intended to close the gap...I'm not seeing it all. In fact, I was thinking about calling Trump to have Elon and DOGE go there to clean house..
Of course it helped close the gap. Without Buchanan the final would have been 35 - 5. 3 million bucks spent to make a 35 - 5 beatdown a more respectable 30 - 8.

My thoughts:

Luke looked great. Based on his career and tonight's results, I think he is going to see a lot of wrestlers try to wrestle a defensive match against him.

SVN has all the tools to win it all.

That was a great shot and finish by Tyler. He did a great job working with what Teemer offered and didn't take the bait by taking half-hearted shots or getting out of position. His ride and ability to quickly escape paid dividends. Very smart match.

Mitchell did that against the #2 ranked wrestler? Wow!

Levi was tough and patient. His finishes and defense were top notch. O'Toole's projected return date in late February doesn't bode well for him in a rematch with Levi. Along with O'Toole and Hamiti, Levi is right there to contend for another national championship.

This being the first time Carter wrestled Ferrari, I wasn't totally surprised by the match. Carter showed Ferrari a lot of respect because I think he knows how good Ferrari is and he also knows that his defense is so good that he didn't need to place himself in vulnerable positions trying to score on Ferrari.

Josh wrestled well overall, but the typical freshman weaknesses of being ridden and giving up quick escapes reared its ugly head. Had Josh been able to ride Buchanan another three seconds I would not have been surprised at all to see that match go into overtime, which I would have loved to watch. I was surprised Josh wasn't more active in using head snaps. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Josh does against Cardenas. I guess the final thing to be said is that Cael's record is no longer in jeopardy!

Greg looked great. He, Steveson and Hendrickson are the cream of the crop at 285.
Bartlett always seems to wrestle down to his lesser opponents.

Don't get down on Barr guys. 2 seconds totally changed that match in my opinion. Had he not been down on that riding time point I think he takes a different approach in the final minute. I'll be honest, after the match I looked at Paul and told him I was pleased the way it unfolded. The month of February is going to help flip that score. Book it..
This^. That RT point changed the strategy and approach for both wrestlers in the third period.

It depends on what Cael thinks of the twins at 197 and Heavyweight moving forward.
Actually, Cael discusses and then plans based upon those discussions. Rarely does he interject himself into what weight guys are going to wrestle. Obviously there are a couple notable exceptions but what weight kids are going to wrestle are pretty much determined by the kids.

I honestly believe what you’re saying, and that Ferrari was part of this let’s see if we could catch him here with the sneaky trick. That looked like incredibly lame.

I don’t think they’re the brightest bunch over there.

I don't often do this, but we should give Gabe Arnold a pass. Jmadden1998 asking to let it go is good advice. That's all I'll say on the subject.

Did he actually ask that? I genuinely didn't see it. I did see where he took passive-aggressive shots at multiple people for discussing it but I didn't see him ask anything.

If Gabe would just keep his mouth and keyboard shut… But when he repeatedly calls out Starocci while:

  • Unable to beat Carter’s back-up
  • Can’t make the lineup card vs PSU two years in a row
  • The Iowa starter at his weight can’t beat Carter
It’s fair to post about it.

And, BTW, I don’t want him to keep his mouth shut. The trash talk is fun. But I also don’t want to be told not to discuss it when he does.

I don’t agree, I saw a bit of separation. Buchanan was in on three shots and scored twice. Josh never once threatened to score, not even close.
The match I watched had Barr up 1-0 going into the 3rd, where he gave up the LONE TD on a shot he made due to the fact that he was essentially down 2-1 at that point due to riding time. If not for the riding time, I think that match ends up in OT. So I do not agree with your assessment.

He is real tough and I think he handled the crowd booing well. The Ferrari's are very limber.
I think the boos were more directed at Brands' decision much more than either Ferrari or Arnold. And I think we can all agree that this was clearly on Brands, not his wrestlers.

You’re an amazing story teller and PBP specialist. Did you have any obstacles on your post 1st period jaunt? You didn’t seem gassed but did that take anything away from experience? How many wife and kid-free rooms do you possess for us?

Thank you!
Thanks! The only obstacle to overcome was typing with the laptop on my lap. It's so much easier sitting at a desk. The big takeaway was to make sure other TVs nearby are preset to the proper channel before the match starts. Then, if there's an incident, I can simply turn on the alternative TV without having to search for the proper channel.

Like I said before, it's your teams board so have at it. Just not my style. As a guest here, I will let it go.

That's fair, however Buchanan was in on a decent shot in the first that Barr fought off. I don't remember Barr ever coming close to scoring. Even if the match goes into OT, Barr is still going to have to get a TD or go to ride outs. He had a significant disadvantage going to ride outs so he most likely is going to attempt to score in SV and most likely we have the same outcome.

They made a gif out of Angelo wrestling Carter in neutral.

They’ll get around that stiff arm to the forehead. Once that’s cleared, Buchanan will have to work harder. Once he has to work harder, he won’t have as much to stay on top as long. Lather, rinse, repeat.

So I should pencil Barr in for a Natty?
