Southern Scuffle Thread

Mam this is a no brain decision...We have a shot to win the title without Mark but outside shoot...With him we keep rolling and win another title and so does he...Yes. He is ready no question !!!! Get him in the line up for some matches the next 2 and a half months....Plus a great seed....
We have a better than outside shot of winning without Hall - I think we're a slight favorite despite the early rankings due to our insane bonus point potential, but I'd like to see him in there so we can put the hammer down and leave no doubt. Hall gives us a buffer as well in case of injury, etc. Another dominating NCAAs and recruiting gets even easier.

All that said, whatever decision is made, I will enjoy the best team I've ever been able to support without being a bandwagoner (being a tragic Philly sports fan that I am :()

Right now, team can get to 110 without Hall, which is my prediction of what they will need to win in 2017.

Need an average of 14 pts from these 8 guys.
Suriano top 4 plus bonus
Retherford wins plus bonus
Nolf wins plus bonus
Joseph AA plus bonus
Morelli AA
Nickal top 3 plus bonus
McCutcheon AA
Nevills top 5 plus bonus

Anything from Cortez and Gulibon is a bonus.

I'll be pulling for everyone, regardless of the decision. But there is no question that with Mark Hall, Penn State is the consensus number one, and favorite to win the national championship for the 6th time in 7 years.

NO doubt.

I think we can win without Mark in the lineup and I think we definitely with him. I think he's the best 174lber in the room, but I'm not sure if pulling the redshirt is the right thing to do.

Yeah, I have them at about 117. Need to tally it again, but it's with just a few points from 33,41 and 74

I would agree with that, if it looked like he wasn't ready and this was a David Taylor like situation.

He is ready, and this isn't a David Taylor like situation.

I believe Hall turns 20 this month. If we assume he takes an Olympic RS in 2020, do we really see him wrestling at NCAAs at age 25 in 2022?

I think the one piece everyone is missing in the "pull the shirt" debate. What does Mark Hall want to do? Does he want to sit out season and develop or does he want a shot this year. He seems like a kid with a plan and while Cael is ultimate decision maker if Mark really wants to go this year then I think Cael would be more inclined to let him do it.

He already beat Valencia twice and now is even better...He and our Bo are back and forth in the room and Bo is bigger....Gotta pull it....IMO FOR SURE...

He beat Anthony Valencia, not Zahid. And Zahid beat Bo Nickal (in freestyle). Zahid is proving to be a more complete college wrestler so far in their folk careers

I see what guys like Murin and Young said about being Hawkeye fans since they were young and that's natural because when those kids were starting out, Iowa was top dog. Well, the longer this streak goes, the more kids grow up all over wanting to wrestle for Cael at PSU.

I want Gable-like domination.

How dare you suggest his redshirt be pulled!

Here's the thing, you and I agree on Mark Hall. We both think we can win without him and would definitely win the title with him. We both think he's the best 174lber in the room. I would bet everybody else here probably agrees with you, too.

The problem is that you use poor, one way street logic to argue here and you're stubborn, which is really annoying, despite the fact that most people probably agree with you on Mark Hall.

I don't think Shakur or Geno would win the Scuffle if they were there. If Mark Hall wins the Scuffle then I think it's clear that he is the best 174lber we have in the room. Whether or not that makes a difference is up to Cael. But it's certainly possible that our best 174lber may not see the mat this year outside of unattached.
Whether the kid is the best 174 pounder in the room has never (and I mean never) been in question, or THE question.

Does the staff believe we win NCAAs with Morelli or Rasheed @ 174.
If it is too close a call, how many more points does Hall make up?
Is that enough to make it comfortable.
What is best for the kid
What is best for the program over the next 5 years.

Those ARE THE questions.

Another consideration for all to consider.
The Valencia kid looks pretty damn good himself and he isn't going to just roll over for Mark. The Valencia kid has certainly benefited from a redshirt and if possible I sure would like to see Mark get the same benefit.

That our staff thinks we can win March without Hall.........just makes giggle a bit.:DThe only downside about Hall going/not going is it has less to do with Morelli and Rasheed and more to do with Cortez and Jimmy G.

No worries, after he wins people will then be saying "oh sure, but he hasn't faced Wade Schalles or Lee Kemp yet...." lmao.
I think everyone on this board agrees that Hall is good enough to possibly win a NC this year. The question, how does this fit into Cael ratings of wrestlers nationally, and what Hall wants to do. Probably Cael and Hall talk this coming week, sans Guns and Spyker.

I agree here. I don't know if his RS should be pulled. I won't argue one way or the other. What I do know is that Cael Sanderson has dominated college wrestling for a while now and has won 5 of the last 6 NCAA team titles. I'm in no position to argue anything when it comes to running the PSU wrestling program. You can't argue with Cael's decisions since he was hired. He has made all of the right decisions so far. I can't think of one wrong one.

I'm just here to enjoy the ride.

I'll support whover the coaches settle on. It certainly is a tough decision, with numerous factors to consider...some of which we as mere fans are completely unaware of.

I think most of us want that. Cael probably wants that. And I'm sure you know it can be strategic/prudent to keep some powder dry awhile. Whatever decision there is to make probably doesn't need to be made now.

If the current picture stays the same or deteriorates come February, I would bet the shirt comes off. But at the moment, I'm betting the picture looks better for PSU come February. Lots of room for improvement at a few weights, and there could be developments with other teams. Pulling a shirt at this point in time could be reckless. Only the coaches are really in position to know that, though.

Not to add fuel to the proverbial dumpster fire but if Hall runs through the Scuffle, I think they should heavily consider adding him to the lineup. I feel like PSU might be headed for a bit of a "have their redshirt and eat it too" situation if they choose to ignore the upgrade Hall would give them because they believe they can win without his points this year. Obviously Cael knows best though.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable if he kept Spyker in the loop.

Exactly how I feel about it. If this were any other sport there wouldn't even be a discussion about it. If he is beating them in the room the shirt would be pulled. What makes it even harder is we love both Geno and Rasheed and want to see them succeed. Cael will make that decision and have to live with it.

Both Spyker and Young Guns have already supported the redshirt being pulled. That's 3, and counting. LP claims "he's ready". That's 4.

It sound like you're confusing the word "supported" with "demand," that's the way it comes off. You believe you're right and Cael is wrong.... don't you see how ridiculous that sounds. You know what they say about opinions don't you?

LMAO. I never said ANY of what you are claiming. Nice pile on attack though, not lame in any way what so ever, haha.

Not that one matchup would change the weighting of the discussion enough one way or the other but I'm pretty sure this is a different Valencia....I don't think the Mark wrestled Zahid.

Right.... Maybe by pulling his shirt now you lose a NC in five years.

Right.... Maybe by pulling his shirt now you lose a NC in five years.

And maybe you simply redshirt him another year, like Cael did with both Zain and Nico. Suggesting something five years down the road, that might or might not happen, isn't exactly sound strategy.

I think we have overlooked the consideration for Geno and Rasheed as how their use, or non use, may affect the team. To pull the rug on them this year could impact the team chemistry?
