Match Thread Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

197 - #4 Josh Barr VS #1 Stephen Buchanan

Period 1:
Big match Barr! Let's go! Circling & head tapping. Barr seems to be keeping his distance. Barr with a low stance, keeping one hand on or close to the mat. More circling & measuring each other up. A couple half shots, but not much more action so far, 1-min left. Stoppage for an eye poke by Barr. Back to action. Buchanan shoots & gets a leg. Barr squares him up & fights it off. Wow! Great job by Barr to fight that off. Buchanan was in deep. Back to center circling, 20-sec left. More of the same as time expires. 0-0

Period 2:
Barr takes down. He gets to his feet, but Buchanan brings him back down. Barr gets to his feet again, then he's back down. Barr's back to his feet on the edge & they go out of bounds, restart, 1:27 left. Barr is still down. He gets to a quadpod & then his feet, but Buchanan drags him back to the mat. Barr gets back up, but not for long. Buchanan with a hard ride. Barr keeps looking for a reversal when he gets up. Barr gets back to his feet, squares up & gets the escape, 1-0. Buchanan has +1:06 RT. Circling in the center, 50-sec left. More circling, tying up & head tapping, 20-sec left. More of the same as time expires. 1-0 Barr, Buchanan +1:06 RT

Period 3:
Buchanan takes down & he gets the escape in 4-sec, 1-1. Buchanan has +1:02 riding time still. That's rough. Barr needed to hang on for a few more seconds to erase riding time. Barr shoots, but Buchanan stuff it. Circling, Buchanan drops to a leg. Barr rolls & they're head to feet. Stalemate & restart, 51-sec left. Barr pushes forward now, 40-sec left. Barr shoots, but Buchanan circles away. Barr shoots, Buchanan counters, gets behind & gets the TD, 4-1. Buchanan rides out the period & adds a riding time point. 5-1 That's a tough loss for Josh, but he was right in the match. A tweak or two here & there could yield much different results the next time they meet.

Stephen Buchanan DEC Josh Barr 5-1

Team Score

PSU: 26
IOWA: 8
well Barr knows he can go with anyone!

That's a really tough call. I think Nolf is more inventive and went for turns a lot more. But no doubt Mitchell is an F5 tornado through a trailer park from neutral. Anybody who tech falls the field while averaging over 18 points a match is damn impressive.
Will Mesenbrink's accomplishments be diminished because of lack of competition? I'm not saying it will, but he's going to roll to a title this year and his best competition is Caliendo, Peyton Hall and Barraclough. Maybe Ramirez. Those guys are very good, but their resumes aren't going to stand out.

That’s the thing, if some random two years ago ran his mouth about Lee then didn’t wrestle the match, you’d hardly notice it I bet. Probably wouldn’t come up.
If Iowa was as good as Penn St, I would be too busy enjoying the dominance and not worried about a freshman running his mouth.

In part the problem is the 3 point takedown. There's less incentive to turn and pin if you know you can take guys down and more matches end early. At this point Mitch has 0 pins this season and six for his career. How differently would he have wrestled w/o the three point TD, how many guys would have been exhausted by dealing with his relentless attacks been pinned in 5 1/2 or 6 minutes?

I'm not sure I'd agree with diminished. But it's definitely a fair assessment to say Mitchell doesn't have the top end competition that Nolf faced. 165 definitely cleared out after last season.

The story is the mismanagement of Arnold IMO.
If he’s the guy he should have felt Star and gone tonight. If not he should have gone last year and RS this year.
If Gabe wrestled, that match isn’t close, Gabe would’ve been taken down at least 2-3x there. It’s clear Angelo is superior to Gabe, and if it they were close, I don’t think Angelo would’ve wrestled.

yes when Zain kicking butt flo said it was a weak weight instead of realizing he was so much better than anyone else!
He didn't make the decision, I mean come on. Was Davis ducking?
Cael made the decision.
I'm sure Gabe and Davis are calling the shots. 🤣🤣
and you know this how?

Someone else said somewhere- he cleaned out the weight class: no one wanted to wrestle 165 with him there.

There are lots of really good college wrestlers who aren't scared of anyone and who think that they CAN beat anyone on any given day but who refrain from making ridiculous promises about a 4-time national champion. I don't make a habit of calling out wrestlers, nor do I hate any of them, but Arnold has made himself a laughing stock.
I agree wholeheartedly on the great majority refraining from ridiculous promises. The only (hypotheotical) way I might see Arnold’s situation as different is if his promise was an act of desperation to force Bob’s and Tom’s hands in letting him take the mat.

That said, it is equally plausible that the Hawkeye staff thought they were being clever by putting Gabe up to it.

Remember the “I’m having a blast!” propaganda they were pressuring their wrestlers to push several years ago? And that ridiculous “Take a Stroll with Stoll” social media mini-series? These wrestlers aren’t immune to the staff’s job security insecurities. Sometimes it is appropriate to feel bad for the wrestlers.

Great night.

A bunch of great matches from our guys obviously. Will touch on a few Iowa things.

Ferrari is going to have a really good career, that kid can wrestle.

What I learned tonight being there was Gabe didn’t duck. You can say a lot of things about the dad, one of the reasons PSU wasn’t interested in Gabe. But he’s not a bad kid. Him talking trash was him trying to get in the lineup, he knew he was sitting.

Agree with that.

But unless he goes in the postseason, what was gained wrestling Ferrari? Meanwhile, Gabe could have gained experience in a big setting against a guy he likely will see at least one more time.

If Ferrari is the guy, then why have we been seeing Gabe at all?

Whole thing just seems shortsighted.

We can have fun, too!!!! That was a funny media campaign

he wrestled his best lineup, unfortunate for Gabe, but I still think he’ll be the guy in March. Let keck and Starroci leave and then Ferrari will be top dog alongside McEnelly and Ryder.

Caliendo is a really good wrestler. Absent Mitch, the clear NC favorite.

He was #2 and unbeaten and he was just taken apart like a cheap Happy Meal toy.

Mitch is 40-1 for his career. Absent a riding time point against Carr, we might be wondering if he would duplicate Cael's unbeaten career.

Nobody's resume is going to stand out when they are subject to this comparison.

He's just not going to have any signature wins, like victories over former national champs. This is how most typically compare guys historically. Pure domination could be the factor that does put him with the all-time greats. Time will tell.

Caliendo is a very good wrestler but no Isaiah Martinez.

Wow that whole Messenbrink narrative changed quickly...Most dominant wrestler in the nation is now just beating second rate guys like Mikey Caliendo 20-4 😂

Likelihood for Penn St

1. Mesenbrink (as close to a guarantee as possible)
2. Starocci (highly likely unless Keck can pull something)
3. Kasak (Teemer, Shapiro and maybe Taylor have a chance)
4. Kerk (Steveson is a big hill to climb)
5. Haines (O'Toole and Hamiti are both elite)
6. Van Ness (already lost to Lovett and Henson is the returning champ)
7. Barr (Buchanan, Cardenas and Ferrari are all tough)
8. Bartlett (Mendez and Alirez both better)
9. Lilledahl (Ramos, Figs and Robinson are all way better than Peterson who he lost too)
10. Davis (too many guys better)

I would say 5 max.

No. MM has two more years after this year. If he continues to win, score at anything near his current pace, and pick up a Hodge or two along the way, he’ll end up with a collegiate career that’s right up there with other PSU greats.
