Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

Interestingly, all 5 of Iowa's transfers won.

I don't think Brands looks at it that way. This is Tom's Super Bowl.
This was a big deal match back when Iowa could compete, and Brands was all in, all the time.
When these matches became Penn State recruiting broadcasts, he adapted a less all in all the time attitude.

Time to get specific.

125: Lilledahl dec Cruz 3-0
133: Ayala dec Davis 3-3
141: Bartlett maj Block 7-3
149: Van Ness dec Parco 10-3
157: Kasak dec Teemer 13-3
165: Mesenbrink dec Caliendo 16-3
174: Haines dec Kennedy 19-3
184: Starocci maj Arnold 23-3
197: Barr dec Buchanon 26-3
285: Kerkvliet maj Kueter 30-3

30 total takedowns

Hope I'm wrong but I'm thinking 19-12 good guys if Ayala wrestles. I am not seeing a large amount of bonus points.

To stoke the flames, here's a throwback of Gabes old man saying PSU wrestling has a racist culture..

He's a "talker" like his son...

Starocci going to look to embarrass this kid and then talk after. I’m here for it. Shots fired first by Arnold. He deserves what’s coming for him
What’s interesting to me about Starocci is he’s a trash talker of the next magnitude but his wrestling never reflects being affected. He remains cruelly tactical. Arnold, however seems to be affected before he even hits the mat.

Over/Under on Iowa takedowns on the night. I’ll set it at 3.5. What would you take?

I’ll say just under At 3. Say 1 each for Ayala, Teemer and Buchanan?

Whaddya say?

Discouraging? I agree pump the brakes that Josh will wilt Buchanan but Buchanan beat Poznanski in tiebreakers last year at NCAAs. Maybe it’s not easy to break Poznanski either and Josh did it.
While I also understand the difference of the 0-0 score at the end of two made this extra impressive. We’ve seen forced exhaustion before. We saw Dylan Alton go down ina hailstorm once and more than one person declared Jason Nolf’s pace as nothing to worry about. The list of Nolfs opponents who left for the hospital looking for a lung transplant is a long one.

MM literally scared the elites OUT of his weight class for this year. Gone.

Barr is part of this rare breed that simply dumps their own gas tank but CAN keep going. Pace is a problem. A big problem because you have to have someone (or several at the same time) come at you in practice the same way and it still won’t work.

This is why CStar said Barr will win a NC. Feel like Barr had 30 head snaps by the end of the 2nd period.

Buchanan is a different beast. I get it. But is he ready for work work work work without the 5-10 second “rests” that all the rest of the wrestling world takes in any given match? Doubt it.

Hard to imagine MM not scoring his average number of points per match (18.5) and only getting a decision. ;)

All three Iowa mercenaries got beat pretty bad by Penn State guys last year. Buchanan got mauled and crunched, Teemer forgot to shoot and escape, and Parco was controlled and pacified. I wonder if that’s why Bob tampered, they fit right in with the rest of the crew. Who on their roster has beat a Penn State starter, just Ayala?
Kind of funny but their only win over an PSU starter who has AA'ed before was Rathjen over Kasak at Carver last year, that's it lol

If Ayala gets a takedown I hope Davis has 2 or Ayala gets his takedown at the very end of the match. Otherwise we will have to watch him wrestle on a knee which is pathetic and irritating.

I’m not sure where the Buchanan is a different beast narrative comes from. He’s really good, but he’s a vacuum filler after AB left the stage. He’s lost to dudes like Tanner Sloan and struggled to beat Poz in OT as recently as last year. He’s got his hands full with Barr

A vacuum from the absence of AB and Hidlay is rather large empty space. AB was other worldly and the gap between Hidlay and the rest of the weight was nearly as large as it was between Hidlay and AB last year. Barr should fill it quite nicely as he matures.

Buchanan is probably a bit better this year than he has ever been. Those guys who go someplace other than Iowa City to develop wrestling skills beyond push and push, and then rent themselves out to the Hawks usually have their best year that first year. Generally due to the first year they are in the best shape of their lives and haven't been beat down yet.

Well, at least not since the Donnell Washington rematch.

Arnold's trash talking reminds me of Tyler Berger -- except Berger dramatically improved himself by his rematch with Jason. Arnold is the same wrestler as when he first opened his yap. This isn't gonna end well for him.

Sasso did get gut shot last year.
Additionally, I think Teemer has always given Sammy problems in previous matchups. Matchup-wise his sporadic offensive attempts which are usually a blast double with the quick finish is the opposite of what Sasso wants to see.

Tyler has shown very good ability to generate his own leg attack and finish cleanly. He's going to crowd Teemer and will need a little patience, but I like this matchup.

lol. True. Though my impression was the Washington thing was a bit calculated and less reactive. Probably just splitting hairs. Either way….it feels like fools gold to go after a guy that has handled everyone, and often in ways they don’t like.

I hate almost every match up.

When you remove those silly looking black and yellow eyeglasses shaped like a pigeons head you are generally a pretty objective and astute wrestling fan.

Will you be posting while getting shytfaced watching Friday's recruiting production on BTN?

That’s true, I’d forgotten about that! I guess I’d just ran through their list of current starters and was thinking about some of the guys who’d transferred. Forgot about ole Rathjen. Would be funny and show the full circle should Kasak beat Teemer

When a guy runs the backside at nationals, expect a full circle. Every time.

Random thought on the lineups for Friday. There should be very little weight cutting between the two squads. Thinking that Buchanan and maybe Teemer would have the biggest. We have 4 guys up a weight(s) from last year, and Iowa has Ayala and Arnold, plus Kennedy up from 65 two years ago, although I think he weighed in there some last year (no?).

Kennedy wrestled 165 last year at the Soldier Salute and moved up after Caliendo beat him.
