Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

Just being honest here, but I don't think the match Friday is going to be as one sided as a lot of people are predicting. You can bet that TnT are still smarting from last year's beatdown in CHA and half of Iowa's starting lineup was on that team too. In addition, all three of Iowa's mercenary starters took bad losses to Penn State guys last year so they also have something to prove. I feel pretty confident that the team score will come out in Penn State's favor, but I think the Hawks are going to put up a good fight.

It would be interesting to see how TnT are preparing this week. Are they foolish enough to think that a couple of days of super intense practices will sharpen their guys for Friday or will they spend their time working on specifics they think are necessary to wrestle better? It's also possible, as some people have suggested, that TnT know their chances of winning are low so they will wrestle backups to protect the seeds of their regular starters. I doubt this will happen, but it's still a possibility. Can't wait until Friday.

I remember last year, there was talk going in Iowa had a path to win the dual at Carver

125 - Drake obviously beat Davis
133 - Nagao looked off going into the dual and was missing a ton of time
141 - Woods is legit even if he took a bad L to Lemley, he was getting over illness as they said
149 - Yup, good call on Carvering of a true freshman
157 - They underestimated how stronger Levi was than Franek (who is pretty strong in his own right) and Levi also looked iffy at times that year
165 - Nobody knew Mitch was that much ahead of Caliendo at the time
184 - If they threw Gabe out

Reality is they have good wrestlers also who obviously will be up for this dual so you always believe your guys can win one of the close ones.

Cael Sanderson Interview

Cael mentions how in the future the top 5-10 tens will be loaded because of the transfer portal and later on (11:07) he mentions that Greg has been off the mat some and battling sickness recently. He also stated that "Greg's goals go beyond the NCAA tournament", which I took as a subtle indicator that Greg will be pursuing freestyle after college.

When you remove those silly looking black and yellow eyeglasses shaped like a pigeons head you are generally a pretty objective and astute wrestling fan.

Will you be posting while getting shytfaced watching Friday's recruiting production on BTN?
I think Madden is probably one of the only fans from Iowa that doesn't wear glasses just saying.

I agree I think every match is going to be hard fought. If Beau doesn't get his offense rolling that one will be close as well. As much as our guys get up for this one I have to believe Iowa is getting ready to bring something. Like almost every dual we have with them on paper it looks good but it never works out that way. I think parko and Van Ness is going to be another hard fought match. I hate to say it but I also think caliendo and messinbrink is going to be closer than usual. Lot of pride on the line. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. All they need is one or two upsets and this is real close. We need someone to step up and bonus. My match of the night is kasak and teemer i can't wait to see how kasak handles this one. It will tell us where he's at going into post season. Can't wait for this one

#IowaWeek (looks like Parris waiting for him on the mat though?)

Probably my favorite walkout song + swagger of all time. Would love to find the video of him doing it at Rec where the young women standing nearby got weak in their knees.

Iowa’s best night gets them 9 points.
This is how I and many believe it is going to go. How @District four made that sound so convincing is amazing and I agree with him.

I agree Iowa will wrestle hard, but will they wrestle aggressively?

I could see some close matches but PSU will come out on top in most of them. I think PSU wins 8 of 10.

It is wrestling and I think somewhere that statement doesn't take into account someone gets caught for 6. So I would think if you say 3 wins for Iowa you have to allow for 6 point upset. That gets you to 15. That's my thought.
I'm thinking 12 points would be over and under.

How do we account then for the 6 point possibility on a Penn State upset pin in the 3 weights we’re giving Iowa?

Surely Barr/Davis/etc I would think have a better pin possibility than say Ryder Block or Joey Cruz or Patrick Kennedy?

I agree. Iowa will slow a lot down. MM will have to stay away from the stalemates ...

Anybody else think that Kasak is going to force Teemer out of his comfort zone? I can't see him waiting around for one scramble, I feel like Tyler is going to force the action and score early which will cause Teemer to panic.

All of Iowa will b e out of their comfort zone. (Stalling, pushing).

Wrestlestat, lists 5 matches for Ferrari. It is confirmed they are all attached?
No. He only has three dates so far - 2 tournaments and the Cy-Hawk. Plus, I asked the same question about Estrada last week in the cesspool, and they said Estrada was unattached at Soldier Salute, so I assume Angelo was, too. That would mean he likely only has 2 attached dates so far.

I am thinking 9 is a great night for Iowa. Last time I recall Iowa pinning a PSU guy was Ramos against Conaway.
Iowa has a shot at 133, 157 and 197. Some may think 149, but history says no.
I would list Ayala as a favorite over Davis, but the other two are tossups.
If Iowa wins 4 matches or scores 12 they outwrestled PSU.
I expect Iowa to wrestle hard. The thing is, Iowa needs to wrestle very hard just to not get curb stomped.
125 Cruz has has looked tough and tenacious. I actually think this is a great test for Luke.
133 Depends on whether Ayala wrestles. Both kids are good, but until I see Davis beat one of the top tier kids in a match i will figure Ayala is the favorite to win a 1 TD match.
141 I would expect Beau to get a bonus
149 I actually think Shayne gets a bonus
157 Teemer is national runner up who wrestles in reverse, Tyler a freshman 3rd placer who takes space. I believe they will have Tyker ready for Teemer's 1 or 2 shots and Tyler makes it a psychical match and wins
165 Caliendo will wrestle hard but it won't matter. A tech
174 PK will wrestle hard, but Levi will either major or just miss getting the last TD for a major.
184 Carter will mansplain things to the child with at least a major
197 this is where we find out if Barr is who we think he is. He is.
Hwt a major, at least.

As much as PSU is going to get Iowa's best shot, Cael and the rest know this is Iowa week and yes PSU structures their entire season so they peak in March but Friday night will be best PSU team we will have seen to this point in the season.
